I'm not posting this to brag, but I ended up pulling off a 1600 on the test. And guess what? I got rejected from two schools I applied to. Colleges are putting less and less emphasis on the SAT; in short, don't worry about it too much. Just go in and do your best. What colleges do look at is how you did over four years of high school, and sometimes even that isn't enough; I managed to hold a #1 rank at my high school for all 4 years, and yet the aforementioned rejections. However, the one college I applied to and that I now attend, the University of Delaware, sent me a letter of glowing acceptance and invited me to take part in a scholarship competition for 100 prospective students out of their 23,000 applicants. College admissions is one of the most convoluted, twisted systems in existence. You can have great grades, a good SAT score, and a good mix of activities, and you will still most likely get rejected from at least one school. My best advice is to relax and go with the flow; once you get those applications in, it's not your problem anymore, so why worry?
