LOL Well, it's like all things, once you are familiar with it, it seems like the only right way of doing it.

I started on Lightwave, and I simply cannot get the hang of 3DS Max, it all seems too 'numerical' and long winded for me :(

Ok i have just painted and tested my model and it has some problems. So, I will probly just make another model, since I know how to skin them now. And I say the most easy way to skin a model is to paint it in truespace with a freespace texture and the go to Segeltech and change all of it.
Oooh, don't use segletuch - it generates _really_ screwey pofs. :( I never had it generate one stable pof actually.

Anyway, i'd suggest that you use TS for all skinning purposes for now - till you get a good grasp of how its mapping system works. After that, learn Lith, and you'll be able to texture just about anything. :)

Presumably it's changed since the version I used, because that one was pretty much f#####g useless compared to max - simply slapped on a basic cubic mapping.

It's that bad? Wow I just mainly use the subsystem part to show where my thruster glows are, but since I found modelview again I don't have to. I really broke a big rule of modeling ther other day. While I was looking on how to skin my model I put all the turrets on it without testing it first :( . Now I find that I made some mistakes and it won't work... Trial and Error I guess.

Well, TBH I only have Max 3, and if that has a UVMapper, I'm yet to find it. But Lith can do other sorts of mappings as well - I mainly use Planar, box and cylinder, but there others.

Meh, don't see it being a problem, it'll be the only one in Machina-Terra, and it's not as if he stole the name, he had no idea you were using it :)

I'm sure it won't make the name any less original, or MT any less enjoyable ;) After all, someone made a ship called the Ragnarok not that long ago, which was the name of the Pre-TI campaign we were working on ;)

No.. I have no problem in changing it. :D Since I found that other site I have plenty of names. I have it posted somewhere in this topic. If anyone has named a ship the same name I name mine I will change it, no problem :) Plus I know there are some names that someone has not used yey :wink:

Max 3 should have both the standard UVMapper tools and also the UVUnwrapper that was strangely omitted in v4 (I needed a plugin for that).

Besides which, lith can't do mapping on a per-face basis, can it? And that's what you need - planar mapping on groups of faces.

so they've added a face selector part, then? Last time I used it, it was simple one big UV map for the entire model, and you could move the UV-ed vertices but not, for example, assign an angled & scaled planar UV to a (visually selected) group of faces. i.e. there was no interaction with actual model.
