As far as I can tell, the hosting WP was using just totally went dark. It was down for a few days, then came back up, but was very slow. Some of the other hosted sites WP runs apparently never came back up after the outage.
A shame, really. Looks like migrating backups might not be possible. Here's hoping we find a solution.

3Did he have any local backups to work with? I have a fair bit of experience with this kind of problem - having had numerous issues myself in the 2 decades running websites. Every once in a while something falls flat on its face and takes you by surprise.
