Dr Who

On a Dr Who phase...

And I couldn't help but wonder if people have got confused about the 'Last Great Time War'. Everyone seems to have images of fleets of ships etc, etc but I get the feeling it was far more subtle than that, more along the lines of the Temporal Cold War, only more vicious.

I suspect the Time Wars were fought not with weapons and ships, but with subtle manipulations of time, races being destroyed before they evolved, critical events in history being tampered with etc by both sides. I even have a suspicion that one day it will be revealed that the Daleks became so aggressive not despite the TimeLords efforts, but because of them, and that Gallifrey was destroyed not as a last resort, but to undo all the damage it had done to history, not so much to destroy the Daleks, but to destroy the entire conflict.

Must admit, am growing to like the new darker Doctor Who storylines, as long as they hold things where they are and don't go too Battlestar Galactica with the angst, then I'm definitely going to have to start paying more attention to the series again in 2009, they're building up to something big, that much is certain.

*Some Spoilers*

Indeed. Although I'm not too familiar with the original Dr Who stories, I am an avid fan. The thing is, where to go from here? Pretty much everything in the entire series was thrown into that season finale. Characters, themes, events, everything got a pitch or mention.

As for Battlestar, well blimey, I can't believe how long we have to wait. And watching Adama's break down during the finale was some of the best acting I've seen. And again, another show where we ask the question 'Where to go from here'?

I suspect that a lot of the direction for the next series will come from whoever they pick as his companion. Despite her detractors I think Catherine Tate did a good job of being something different from the usual eye candy.

I especially loved the Turn Left episode where we got to see Earth without The Doctor's influence.

From the looks of it they're bringing back the Cybermen for Christmas. Which should be cool. One thing I'd like to see Dr Who do though is introduce a new iconic monster of some sort. So far all the bad guys have either been returning classics (Daleks, Cybermen, The Master and now Davros) or they've been very Villain of the Week. Even when they've been good (Like the Weeping Angels in Blink) they haven't been anything I see returning with a big fanfair 2-3 years from now.

I suppose that's not the sort of thing you can plan. You just introduce races and see if any of them strike a cord.

I too should pay more attention as I've liked most episodes but haven't rushed to see the next.

I don't think Tennant has been signed for another series, though, just the last few specials.

Yeah, I like Doctor Who, the new series is great, but I just can't get over how bad the last episode was.

Doctor Who has always been famous for stupid ways to end Dalek invasions, but the latest one was just pitiful. I mean the void was okay, Bad Wolf was fine, but this last one? Making all the Daleks explode by typing things into a typewriter which is in a f#####g dungeon? They built up Journey's End so much in The Stolen Earth I was expecting something better than that (with the Osterhagen Key and all that) but in the end all those extra plot details were pointless. They stopped the Osterhagen Key so quickly that it didn't need to even happen, and the Supreme Dalek could have just been another regular Dalek and it wouldn't have changed anything of the story.

Seriously, I have decided that Russel T. Davies leaving is a good thing, after seeing this last episode. Hopefully Moffat (who wrote Blink, the Empty Child, the Library, etc.) will do a better job at tying up stories than just pulling things out of his ass. :doubt:

The only thing I watch Doctor Who for is the Daleks, which is probably why I was so disappointed with the latest episode... Though Moffat's episodes are really good, they allow you to guess the ending, instead of just leading you to some random, unexpected stupid "hey, use the macrokinetic tribophusical waveform extrapolator" endings of Davies' stories.

Oh, and about the Last Great Timewar, apparently it was started because the Time Lord sent the Forth Doctor back to stop the creation of the Daleks in the Genesis of the Daleks (which was a pretty cool serial too). So in effect, I guess the Time Lords were the ones who caused the war and the aggression of the Daleks.

I suppose my only concern is that there's now been two episodes now where the day has been saved by a human with a 'Time Vortex' inside them. I do hope that Time Vortex doesn't become the Sonic Screwdriver as a 'get out clause' for difficult situations.

But all in all, I'm enjoying it, even if they do keep throwing the poor Doctor through an emotional wringer.

I would also like to see some newer 'enemies' the are only a few that stick in mind, and not all for the right reasons (Bertie Bassett lookalikes etc) the Reapers were interesting, and possibly could be built on with the Timelords gone, and the Shadows in the Library were pretty interesting too, they were probably the closest to that 'hide behind the sofa' feeling of some of the original monsters.

Ah, i see where you're going here........

Problem is (2 things) - Stargate was less cheesy at the start (Dr. Who is and always will have cheesiness, it's part of the shows identity), and I also saw that at a younger and more forgiving age.

I feel old when people say they watched Stargate at an earlier age than Dr Who. :D

Stargate SG-1 was good for the first three seasons, then it went downhill. I still know some people who watch it, though it confuses me to this day why they watch it. Especially when they claimed to only watch it for Anderson.

I don't watch BSG (remake), because I saw the original and didn't care for that in the slightest.

---

I've seen a few episodes of Dr. Who (remake/continuation) and it seemed interesting enough, but I'm going to watch the original series before I start watching the new one.
