Fred + OpenGL = no workie

Well, according to Fred (all SCP versions i've got), i don't have openGL 1.2
Error: Current GL Version of 1.0 is less than required version of 1.2
Switch video modes or update drivers

According to all other sources, i have OGL 2.0, so somethings amiss.
I've tried reinstalling (completely erasing and reinstalling) the latest ATI drivers, finding an OGL 1.2 installer (no luck), re-detecting display adapter via the original FS launcher and reinstalling 3.6.5. I should also note that trying to play FS in OGL mode gets the same crash.

P4 2.4Ghz, Win XP (no SPs), Radeon 9800 Pro 128 - latest cats, 1536 RAM
I could try rolling back to the 4.4 drivers, but i don't know if that's the problem.

Has anyone seen this before or has an idea of what to try? I'm stumped. :\

IIRC in the really old days Phreak checked if the current ver was bigger then 1.2 by seeing if the number behind the decimal point was a 2 or higher, therefore, 2.0 was fucked. Dunno if this is a new bug, or an old one coming back.

The version that I'm using does that too; what's worse, it doesn't display the mission layout at all, just a small pink rectangle in the upper left. I haven't bothered to download a new version, since I just use mine to check on the occasional event/debriefing option in a level I'm playing. I believe that Phreak may have fixed the bug about version numbers in the most recent version, though.

What I really can't figure out is why FRED retail gives some sort of runtime error when I try to run it (a conflict with some of the SCP files, maybe?), or even why I can't seem to open campaign files with any version of FRED. Just more of life's little mysteries. :P

Thanks all - i think Kas is right. I hunted down the very latest fred: http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/f ... adid=32771 and found it to not only work, but work much much better and faster than any fred has ever worked before on this machine. :D

The waypoint wandering appears to be fixed, as does the disco effect, and with -fredhtl and -jpgtga enabled, it was able to very decently display all big high-detail models i have: Orion, faustus, deimos, sobek, aten, fenris, aeolus, triton, and the TI secret pic one at once and still work fine. :) yay!

OGL!=HTL

First, a list of what's what:

OGL, something like D3D, to make the graphic card draw what you want to. A layer between drivers and games.

HTL, HTNL,HT&L: Hardware Transform and Lighting: Letting the graphics card do more and the processor less. Faster then:

STL, ST&L, software mode: Making the CPU do it all, slow as hell, but the only way to do things before HT&L was there.

FRED used to be software D3D IIRC, then Phreak OGL'd it, and then HTL'd the OGL. It took a lot of work, and made a lot of bugs, but all is well now.

All of the above is IIRC and AFAIK.

I knew... most of that, but I have a separate shortcut to some sort of old OGL build of FRED on my desktop - I assumed it had been a one off and that most FREDs had been D3D. If I was wrong, I'm not surprised.

Unfortunately for me, this build refuses to load my tables with external weapons. It keeps telling me that its expecting the AI class line.

i'll probably release a new fred soon. i fixed those alignment problems. It seems that waypoints and ships were rendered with the view zoom at 0.75 (the default for in game) and the grid and selection dots were rendered at 0.5 (zoomed in a bit)
