Since I have decided to give this game a try:
Whats the some pointers in creating a character that will be both versatile and effective?! I am thinking high intelligence but I dunno...

Each skill has a primary and secondary attribute that affects training time. Spaceship Command and Gunnery are both big on perception and willpower. Industrial skills are primarily memory or intelligence. Same with science. Corp management and social skills are dependant on charisma.
Leet Al > I have sh###y charisma, so I compensate by using 7 heatsinks on my Armageddon

Don't neglect Intelligence and Memory though. They effect training times.
You can upgrade attributes while in game, which takes time, but is very handy.
Read the Players guide on the eve official site. It explains alot on which is the better ways to go depending on your play style.
I went for all combat stuff at the begining. But now thinking about it, I would of upgraded Intelligence and Memory some more too.
