F**king gremlins

I'm in a really bad mood now. It seems like my houses electricity supply is possessed!

A few days ago my cordless trackerball started playing up. I assumed that the problem was the battery and replaced it but I still had the same problem. So I disconnected it and used the mouse from my second PC until I could be bothered to go out and buy some new ones.

Yesterday I bought some new batteries and decided to try them out. I turned off my PC and picked up the trackerball only to find that in the 3 days it was disconnected the battery had decided to leak out and eat away at my trackerball. So I'm pissed off and I decide to turn my PC back on only to find it's dead.

So basically I spent an hour or so yesterday trying to figure out what was wrong and basically narrowed it down to the motherboard. So I've ordered a replacement.

This morning I turn on my TV and it's dead too. This time it turned out to just be the fuse. Looks like I'm getting power spikes or something but both devices are plugged in through a Belkin surge suppressor so I shouldn't be getting that. I'm debating at the moment whether that's enough evidence to claim on the guarentee that the suppressor came with.

You're the second person on these boards to lose their motherboard in the past few months without any real explanation why, Kara... good luck fixing this mess.

It's gremlins. I don't own a single peice of major electrical equipment that doesn't give me trouble in one way or another.

I think the best one is my Hi-fi which occassionally attempts to smack me by ejecting the CD tray at random. It won't do it for ages but a couple of times a year I'll see the CD tray coming towards me out of the corner of my eye.

The TV downstairs on the other hand has the habit of turning itself on and off whenever it feels like it.

Even before the motherboard died the PC had a bug whereby it wouldn't reset without hanging on the next start up. It wasn't even a windows problem cause the exact same thing would occur even if I booted from floppy. Quite frankly I'm just mystified about how on earth that could happen.

AAAAAHHHHHHRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!1111

More attacks. My second PC suffered a HD failure and then refused to boot up again. Yet again another blown fuse.

Nothing else in the house seems to be having problems though so I suspect it must be the surge protector. I've disconnected the device now but I'm feeling pretty nervous about running without it connected in case it wasn't to blame.

Either way I'm calling up Belkin tomorrow to get them to honour their warranty. Bloody thing. I only bought the damn thing to prevent me from having exactly this sort of problem in the first place.

Anyway if I suddenly vanish for a while you'll know why.

In the past, my computer has responded to power surges in the house when an appliance is switched on. Usually just the main TV... Which is right at the other side of the house, downstairs. Buzz, I hear, and then I see "AMIBIOS"

But, it's rare... I get more restarts from static discharges through the carpet than power surges. That's more annoying. Afterall let's not forget my previous computer was fried by a thunderstrike.

The fuse going on my PC and TV today means that I've now lost 4 different electrical devices or peripherals in 2 days. Fortunately it was just the fuse that went on those two but I'm looking at around £40 to replace my logitech cordless trackerball and another £51 I've already shelled out to replace my Asus A7N8X-Deluxe with the A7N8X-E board I 've ordered. I really can't afford to lose anything else but since I'm studying for my Network+ exam at the moment (planning to take it on Thursday) I can't really afford to lose internet access (If I could I'd just unplug my PC and use the not very good TV as normal to see if I could blow the fuse again).

Wow Hunter, your PC must be really sensitive to electrical noise on the power grid. Usually it's extremely tough for things on different electrical circuits to influence one another at all.

Kara, the first thing I'd do is move the computer to a different circuit. There may be something funny going on with your house's electrical system, but if everything that's gone wrong has done so off of one circuit you should probably investigate. And ditch the surge protector; electrical surges aren't all that commonplace on a good distribution system anyway unless the weather happens to be stormy. Just only use your PC when you need it and unplug it when you don't until you can get a new surge protector.

I've disconnected the surge protector but I'm well aware that the electrics in the house are a little screwy. When you get things like electrical equipment turning itself on and off at will you start to think that having a protector is a very good idea but it looks like this particular one is responsible for my problems (I used the previous one for 2 years and never had any problems with it).

Fortunately the warrenty supposedly covers me for up to £60,000 of damaged equipment from the protector not doing its job so hopefully I shouldn't have too much trouble getting them to pay me back for what was damaged.

I'm probably dooming myself by saying this, but I run my computers off a non surge-protected multiplug, and they've both kept running happily even during brownouts which have dimmed the lights and reset the clock on the microwave.
