Is there any point to joining if being on the Uni's internet means I can't DL/UL an awful lot of stuff? Or is it a different sort of sharing?

Aye, it's mostly going to be for exclusive media, so you can download that fine - That'll HTTP hosted. As for things like FTP, Torrents and stuff, that's in early stages...
