Don't aim for that many missions. Hell, don't aim for a specific number. Tell your story, cram as much gameplay and story into every one - You'll end up with far fewer missions, but generally much more "fruit filled" ones. It also helps to use a notepad and write down (yes, pen and paper) your story. This also helps you maintain a sense of internal continuity. It's also good to actually preplan every mission by writing a script, a kind of "general rundown" of what you have to do. Once you get to a certain script, you know where your going - Then you can explore it in more detail. Don't fragment your mission building, but try to have a balance of arc/standalone missions. The arc missions would be part of the major story, the standalones would be fillers with small arc elements.

Isn't Quarentine already the name of an FS1 campaign?

I have to admit, I get worried when I hear of campaigns with 'many new mods'; screams of feature creep, something I have a lot of experience of :D

Yeah, 99 = too much. Maybe around 30 or so, not too many missions, but enough to put alot of storyline into. :)

30 is alot of missions. If you've never made a campaign before, aim for 10-15 missions at most... Or else you will be overwhelmed, and more than likely get sick of it midstream...

i meant like if each mission was a single event, it would be over 100. besides, over 60 missions for a single campaign for FS2 is way too many IMO. the FS2 one wont be that long, beleive me.

@ hunter: i know  even though i hate writing scripts...

@ aldo: many new MODs = a couple ones for GTVA/shivans, etc, and a handful for the terrans when we reach earth again, and a few for... ... ...

ahh... almost divulged a secret :)

@ everyone who helped to point out that long campaigns = bad: yeah, its not going to be that long (see above) but i mean this is getting to be a massive story. i cant do the whole thing, as its starting to include like 2 new races, thousands of new ships (yes, THOUSANDS!!! MWAHA! :o ) and an entire new universe... i dont know WHAT ill do with this huge idea. sadly, it will probably just fade away into oblivion, like so many other things...

Think of everybody's hard drives, for once. Or yours. Or your brain, trying to keep that much stuff straight.

No, not really. Unless Grim has something else to announce.
