A good one pops up now & again on Twitch, but the vods disappear pretty quickly so it helps to check frequently. There aren't many good ones on Youtube.

Controversial opinion: I now think FS1 was a better representation of the FreeSpace universe.

I'm shrinking the forum down, it's a bit old now... losing bone density and stuff.

I would say it's time for an update, but the frontend is actually kinda nice and was way ahead of its time, so I guess I'll leave that be? Backend could use some patching though.

Yeah, the front end looks good. Looked good when it was new, and still does.

Actually, I agree. It's hard to describe the feeling I have about FreeSpace 1 and its atmosphere. FreeSpace 1 creates a very unique atmosphere, beginning with the end of the Terran-Vasudan War and gradually shifting into the sense of doom that builds throughout the Great War. It also develops a lot of pre-Great War lore through the ship descriptions in the tech room. Through the tech room worldbuilding and the Ancient monologues, the game really emphasizes the loneliness of space and the helplessness of the Ancients, followed by the GTA and PVE.

Don't get me wrong: FreeSpace 2 has better in-mission dialogue writing, amazing lore about NTF that is presented during command briefings and amazing atmosphere of the lost generation - no one can really argue with that. It also has a much more layered story and shows how the GTVA's arrogance led them to bring destruction upon themselves by tampering with forces beyond their understanding.

Having that in mind I love both games, but FreeSpace 1 is too underrated. Perhaps the answer to that is Silent Threat: Reborn, which to me is the peak FreeSpace that combines strengths of both games :D

I think the setting and scope of FS1 had a lot of potential but my personal experience was inverted... having played FS2 first, I read the FS1 story through the techroom and thought "hey, that Great War-part must've been pretty cool", but when I got there I was disapointed, and not just bc of the original FS1 graphics. The biggest hype moments (VP destroyed, chasing Lucy to Earth) felt anti-climatic, in particular that we barely knew what was at stake; there was no mention of bombardment or anything.

Also it would've been nice to experience GTAs adaption more gradually, from no shields over dysfunctional shields to fully operational ones.

My viewpoint is probably different than yours as FS1 was the first game I played. Anyway, I like your idea of gradual adoption of shields. It's probably something that Iain Baker might be interested in his FS1 remake project.
