Worth reviving?

It seems to me the Freespace side of Sectorgame is more or less dead. I've tried to revive it on my own but theres only so much I can do with the time I have on my hands. If I hired people to update Freespace 2 Sector (news, downloads and the community gallery) would it work? There doesn't seem to be anyone willing to do that and I don't think there is much to update the site with. And then ofcourse, there is option of bringing more active projects onto Sectorgame, supporting them by providing webspace, a forum and promotion on F2S (and integrating project news updates into the F2S index). But the problem then is finding those projects and teams willing to do that. F2S is mostly unknown to a good 70% of the community.

It should be kept opened, and the stuff left up so its archived, and keep the section on the forums, just incase some poor fool finds us.

Well, I think it is worth it. Second, in order to gain popularity it will be really wise bringing new projects. Third, asking for help on other similar portals and forums often helps.

I have a campaign release coming up soon, à la Blaise Russel (hence the tech support PM :p). I could coordinate it with a new hosted project drive, or whatever.

SG became stagnant due to a combination of fewer people joining and fewer projects making progress. Fixing one or both of those would definitely help. HLP could cooperate by pointing new projects here instead of hosting them ourselves.

The problem is that if you revitalize the site, you'll lose a bit of the friendly pub atmosphere that you currently have, where everybody pretty much knows everybody else. You decide if the tradeoff is worth it. :)

It ain't worth it IMO. When I joined HLP we had the pub atmosphere. I believe I was one of the early comers of a newbie wave that has seen hundreds of new newbies (and n00bs) arrive at HLP. When I joined I liked the atmosphere of HLP but now it's just chaotic. I say SG stays happy. Happy > big/rich/woteva.

People don't give a crap about FS2 aymore, anyways. The only things that get a decent amount of actual work done are almost universally (and derivative) TCs, and that's only because they draw in fans of the existing work.

I don't think we'll lose that atmosphere because we've taken on projects in the past along with an influx of newcomers and it didn't really upset the balance much. Also it's worth pointing out we still get through a LOT of bandwidth every month, so I wouldn't be able to take much on. Theres lots of data floating around the server that could be cleaned up though - Especially amongst the member folders.

Also I don't just need projects and members in the forum, I need some folks to help keep F2S updated. Such as simple news posts, tracking down new mods and getting them submitted plus utilizing the gallery section for screenshots, desktops, wallpapers and all sorts of interesting FS2 related material that's been created over the years by fans.

Yeah Shadows of Lylat and Beyond the Red Line apart there hasn't been much progress anywhere. Especially the "old guard" HLP projects.

Having said that, there are surprises. Who'd have thought CP would have got Procyon finished, almost totally out of the blue ?
