FS2 Special Edition? What is this?

1
Hey guys. FreeSpace 2 has come up in a little discussion on another board I visit, and one guy was asking about which would be best to get (the CD release or the download version). Anyway, he mentioned about a Special Edition with bonus content (20 new missions!) and linked to this:

Can't say I know anything about this (couldn't even find a mention of it on karajorma's famed FAQ site). I was wondering if anybody could shed some light on exactly what these new additions are like? Were they proper full-blown Volition creations, or a collection of fan-made missions? Any other changes?

And since I'll assume my copy of FS2 is a standard one, does this mean that there's some top-notch stuff that I've missed out on? :D

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. :)

:sg:

If I remember correctly, the 20 extra missions are multiplay missions, which were actually designed by the community. Still if you can get the anniversary version etc, it's still probably worth it. The download version is fine, but It's always better, in my experience, to have the whole kit if possible.

And yes, you are missing out a lot ;) Check out the SCP at www.hard-light.net and take a look at the source code project. It can be a little tweaky to get working at first but is certainly worth the effort ;)

What you are looking at is the Interplay 20th anniversary rerelease of FreeSpace.

With the Icy grip of death upon them Interplay desperately tried to claw back some money and one of their solutions was to re-release FS2 bundled with a few missions available for download from the net and sell it for an exorbitant price from their online shop. Their stragegy failed and they have been trying to stave off bankrupcy ever since.

That said if you want a hard copy of the game it's a nice buy :)

Flipside and karajorma: thank you both for the info. It's much appreciated. :)

Just to make it clear by the way, I wasn't looking to purchase that 20th anniversary edition myself, the guy on the other board was looking into it. I'd already bought the game years ago. I was just wondering if those 20 bonus missions were anything significant I'd missed out on since I bought my game long before. But then if they're community-made multiplayer missions, and not official additions to the actual FS2 plot/storyline, then I'm not too bothered.

Oh and Flipside: FS2_Open was recommended to me a while back (in fact karajorma was a big help in getting me started with that. :) ) Unfortunately I haven't been able to really try it yet, as I had a problem with my computer that was unrelated to the game but ended up constantly minimising and crashing it every 15 minutes! :x That's since been sorted though so hopefully I can use it properly in the near future.

Well, thanks again guys. Nice to know there's always experts on hand - you clever clever people, you... 8)

Ah Grug, I'm always partial to a bit of hot pancake action! :D

Seriously though, you might see me joining in a bit more with any discussions going on about mods. Pretty much the only reason I downloaded FS2_Open was because some mods recommend it, and I'd want to get the best I can out of them. So once I get a good chance to check some of them out, I will finally be one of you lol. 8)

Oh, I wouldn't say it failed completely. That 20th Anniverary re-release happens to be the only hard copy of FS2 I own. :) I practically flipped out when I found out about it; I'd been looking all over for a copy, but the only ones I ever found were going for $90+ on eBay. I must have played through the FS2 demo ten times to try to slake my thirst. Then, one day, I happened to see that re-release, and I had it ordered by that night. I believe my copy was in the 160s or so.

Someone's getting a battering with an empty maple sauce bottle tonight.

Not me.
