Missions & campaigns - your recommendations?

So I sit here at my computer, wanting a little break from working my way through Half-Life 2, or Deus Ex (for the umpteenth time!). So I rummage around, and what do I come across but my Freespace CDs. Ooooh...

Having also played through the retail FS games several times, I'm now looking for a new challenge. As a total newcomer to the online fandom, (and to be honest, surprised there's still some places around after all this time!), I knew practically nothing about playing the fan-made missions.

So please, give me your recommendations? What are the best missions and campaigns out there, and where do I get a hold of these delights?

I'm looking for single-player only (I'm not really a multiplayer person), and preferably for FS2 - I am open to FS1 suggestions but I can't get FS1 running on my new computer, and using my old computer is a right pain in the butthole!

Alas I've always been hopeless as using FRED1/2, or any game's level editors for that matter - I'm not a technical man! So please, help out the new guy! Let me scratch my itchy trigger finger! 8)

Thanks in advance. :)

Well what do you know? Fan-made missions still exist! LOL. I was wondering if any links would still work after all this time. My early searching dug up one or two campaigns that looked interesting, but it looked like they had been abandoned long ago! :(

Well a big thank you to you, Black Wolf! First thing's first: I want to finish Half-Life 2 first, then I'll reinstall FS2 and try some of those suggestions. (Hard drive space is a prob for me right now, but I wanted to get a hard start on this).

karajorma: as in my other thread, I appreciate your input here. I'd heard a little bit about Volition releasing the source code (that's actually what inspired me to start exploring). But just so I'm clear on this: I own a retail copy of FS2 - I don't NEED to use FS2_Open in order to play the community-made campaigns, correct? (Yeah I've read about the graphical improvements and what not, but to be honest I'm quite happy with what I've got and would rather avoid the hassle of changing if possible).

Well thanks again guys, and if anyone's got more recommendations, please keep them coming! :)

My recommendation is Sync. It's LONG and has a wonderful plot, but also has distinct lulls in the fighting action, which personally I quite like, as it is more realistic than simply blowing stuff up in every freaking mission. Anyway it's a good one to start out with. :)
