No one's saying that people still don't use prohibited substances on campus, just that the official policy prohibits them in the first place. And, last time I checked, my parents are spending multiple thousands of dollars a year to get me a good education and a career, not for me to get completely plastered/stoned.

You're paying your own way? Ouch. My family's not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination, but they've never even brought up the idea of me paying my way through college. If I ever become a parent, I fully expect to take on my kids' college bills. Maybe it's different in Britain, but around here, other than a few unusual circumstances, people usually only pay their way through college if there's no other way to afford it.

To be fair, it's cheaper here by a country mile. Our fees are a lot less (£1k per year over 4 years; about $1800 under current exchange rates), and they're deferred in Scotland.

But yes, I am - or rather, did. I'm about 8 grand in the hole to the student loans company. Other people are a bit worse off, of course; highest I've personally seen (i.e. of a mate) was about £14k. If I go back to do an MSc, it'll only be under a studentship.

And the english (and welsh) are fucked; they get up to 5 grand top up fees nowadays, so they'll be about 20 grand down by the end.

Studying abroad is actually cheaper in some cases

Did I mention that for some strange co-incidence all 4 lecturers / tut's for my 113 subject (systems architecture [aka maths and s###]) all have either a monotonous voice, a heavy, difficult to understand accent, or both.

Seriously WTF!?

They are much easier to understand after a jug of rum though... >.>

Yeah, a good portion of people around here will either need to take out a loan to finigh college/uni or work through it...

That's not a coincidence, that's computer science/maths lecturers for you.........

Although I remember having one lecturer called Duncan Smeed who was totally off his nut - we had one long lecture that become a sweary and funny tirade against Microsoft and Intel (it was a CompArch lecture); after 45 minutes , he looked at his watch and realised he'd spent almost the entire lecture not doing any teaching - and promptly said 'sod it, off you go'.

Classic.

in the aussie system, the government pays our fees, then as soon as we have a decent paycheck, we have to start paying it back. for that reason, a lot of well educated people over here have minimum wage jobs.

Not really. Depends where you are studying, what you are studying, and how well you are at it.

It's just a better way of doing things than self financed courses. Hopefully the system lasts...
