Ripping DVDs

1
Hm well heres a dilemma. I'm trying to find a way to copy some DVDs for my uncle, but I'm having trouble finding ways to do it. I was intending to just copy them directly, but every damn thing I have is dual-layer, and those are way too expensive to copy. So, is there anyway of "ripping the DVDs" to a format that is playable on regular DVD players? I know that XVID movies for example, RARELY work on DVD players. Hmm, I guess what I'm trying to do is put several episodes of a series onto a DVD-R in MPG format, but using only codecs the DVD player will support. Kind of like an SVCD? Is this even possible? To play MPG files (that are supported) on a DVD-R, ON a regular DVD player? (were talking a player, not a computeter one).

Just be aware, encoding MPGs takes an @$$load of compute time. I tried it one time but stopped shortly after I started when it started showing the calculated time to somewhere in the 36 hour range.

I'm not talking about xvid or divx, I talking about full blown mpeg1 video/audio to use for a VCD.

Thanks Mark, but I don't think that will do the job. I need something that'll compress a dual-layer DVD to single-layer, without actually ripping it to MPEG. Most regular DVD players won't support a "SVCD" or MPEG selection that's on a DVD. Unless I'm missing something... Doh.. Im running outta time :(
