So...I'm writing my CV, and I'm uploading it to a place with a 100k size limit.
And my 2 page doc CV (the only allowed format) is 218k. Crikey.
So.... I first save it as rtf; identical formatting & font, not visual change, but the size more than halves already (105kb).
I open the rtf file, delete two words in it (literally), save as doc.... and the new filesize is now 56.8 kb.
Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?

Were they really, really big words?

MS word produces bloated files. Why are you surprised by this?
Try looking at some HTML produced by it one day and you might see why. Every single line has a declaration for the font etc in it regardless of whether or not it's exactly the same as the 10 paragraphs proceeding it.

I know....I remember trying to get the comment markup tags from a word document which I couldn't open on my work laptop.....ugh.StratComm wrote:Actually a MS word save file is closer to quite literally a memory dump from that program. It allows things to get reloaded quickly, but makes for a file that nothing else - not even humans with a lot of patience - can understand.

Actually why the f**k are you still using Word anyway?
Would have thought that someone as Java savvy as yourself would have moved over to OpenOffice long ago.

OpenOffice has its drawbacks though.
It doesn't always have the support that one needs.

Old versions looked similar and the 2.0 beta is getting very close to indistinguishable.Hippo wrote:Openoffice is the one that appears identical to word, but is freeware?
It will quite happily save in Word format anyway so why people continue to pay for Word is beyond me. Sometimes I think people just like giving MS their money.
