Trenchfoot was worse, IIRC; lot of infections for one thing (standing all day in freezing, stagnant water with the bodies of dead men and rats decomposing in it).

Trenchfoot was basically necrosis of the feet, i.e. your feet were dying under you, chillblains is a very very mild version of it.

If you are under about 40, your circulation should be healthy enough prevent it, however, I'm assuming a moderate/cool climate, not bloody freezing ;)

For the evolutionists amongst us, theres actually an interesting debate about 'Man the Fish-Eater' and various diseases you can get from standing around in the water, and if we did hunt fish all day, how come we have bodies that are susceptible to these diseases ;)

I had a really painful blister recently... I walked a couple miles up-hill (I was powered by love adrenaline!). By the next day, it didn't hurt at all... That was a fast heal. :P

Why would anyone assume we spent ages standing around in the water hunting fish?

Easy source of food; presumably there's supporting evidence for it....
