Gas has just topped $2.20 a gallon. Here's the kicker, it went up $0.15 in one ****ing day.

I don't what it takes, or who gets killed in the process, but I can't afford to drive at these prices and I certainly can't afford a car that gets better mileage. So find me an alternative that is cheaper.

You can't save up ~500.00 and get yourself a little Kia, or Hyundai shitbox? They'll give you great gas mileage, albeit, they'll not have the acceleration you're used to with your v8.

Granted, you guys have a much better public transportation infrastructure than the US does. Especially in rural areas of the US.

Take it up with your glorious leader. It was the invasion of Iraq that pushed up the price of oil in the first place.

I think my point was:

"Where the f### do they get off raising prices $0.15 in 5 hours?"

I was surprised more than anything else, because this particular station had been in the lower price bracket(Shell, BP, and Exxon being the usual high points). Luckily I found a station that was still $2.05. You shoulda seen it, it was backed up 3 deep like the gas shortages back in the 70's.

The theory behind Oil prices is simple. When demand is high, increase prices to decrease demand (people start biking, using Public transport, not moving around, etc.) But that theory went out the window with China, India and a lot of other previously minor oil consumers taking off economically. Thus, Oil demand continues to increase despite Price hikes and OPEC just keeps hiking the price trying to slow down usage, which is simply not going to happen. Which leaves us in the current situation - OPEC don't want to change their procedures, the rest of the world doesn't want to stop using Oil at pre Iraq levels. So the price is just going to keep going up. In fact, the last estimate I heard put the cap at about $100 US a barrel. It's at around $58 a barrel at the moment. Do the maths.

What the f### are you on about? I mean, that worked really well in Iraq, look at the tonnes of oil pouring from there now....oh wait, they import cos the pipelines keep getting bombed.

Ah, maybe you mean the somewhat undemocratic Islamic governments in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, who have religious police and commit abuses like torture? Oh, nope....US allies, I forgot.

United Arab Emirates? Undemocratic, but...nope. Ally on the 'war on terror'. bugger, eh?

Qatar? Hmm... again undemocratic... oh, wait - the US uses Al Udeid Air Base there (after the Saudis denied use of their airspace to attack Iraq). Maybe not great for Pr to attack there.

Nigeria? Nope; another ally there against 'terror'.

Algeria, perhaps? (although they were key in negotiating the release of US hostages from Iran)

Hmm... there's not much option there. Canada, Mexico... too close. Norway, the UK... too controversial. Russia...too dangerous.

I know! Iran!

After all, we all know how good the last war was at liberating all those captured barrels of American oil.

You are quite well informed on the worlds current politics aldo. Do you get a newsletter from the UN or something? :p Or perhaps you should send them one...

As for Indonesia... give them enough time for either the rebels to finally succeed or for the government to defeat the rebels and manage to unite the nation and then head south to try and invade Australia.

Petrol prices here are under the $1 mark for now. ranging from 87 to mid 90's.

The Arab nations stuff is old news, though; not just because the US had to fish for allies prior to invading Iraq, but also because there are long business ties with US oil producers to even the most repressive Arab regimes. I think George W Bush (in his capacity as governor of Texas) actually arranged entertainment for key members of the Taliban in Texas, when local companies were trying to negotiate a pipeline through Afghanistan, for example.

The Saudi issue in particular is well known, though.... they pioneered the concept of shoving a stick (with one end covered in spicy pepper sauce) up someones arse as an 'interrogation' technique. The US partly maintains relations with places like this because they can extradite terror suspects to there for 'interrogation' without worrying about the US legal systems protections. (there was a furore in Ireland when it was revealed one of the planes transporting these prisoners was refuelling there; it eventually prompted them to switch to refuel at Prestwick, which has seen similar protests)

Well, I guess that somebody (maybe the UN) has to get on OPEC's case before the prices will drop.
What I want to know is, the US occpies one of the leading prodceing countires of crude oil, and yet we have such high prices. Maybe we should get 50% of what the produce in exchange for setting up their country.
