And drag racing can be fun at times :p

Another big difference, that most people wouldn't expect after looking at newyork taxi drivers for example, is that people in the EU seem to be a bit more impatient when driving through a semi rural setting... Here, there's stop signs, and traffic lights that you have to stop at, whereas when i was in scotland, people had a tendancy to go crazy when they had to stop where they usually might not have to...

From what I hear the russians could give us a run for our money. Then again maybe that's cause they have to queue for anything.

That's cause in America you chronically misuse stop signs. Every single corner seems to have one. In the UK we use roundabouts to keep traffic flowing but in the US they seem to think that getting everyone to stop and then argue amongst themselves over who goes first is the correct way to do things :|

two roads intersect == stop

if there are 2 cars the one that was there first goes first, if they arrive at the same time, the one on the left goes first.

There used to be a 7-way stop up in Albertville, before they gutted it and opened up the downtown.(damn urban development :x ) It truly a wonder of the world, 7 high-medium traffic roads intersecting with signs(no lights mind you)and I have never heard of ever having being a wreck there or some much as a foul word being said about it.

Actually, that's not true in the UK; give way means you stop & wait if the road is busy, otherwise you carry on. Stop means...well, stop and check, then go.

i.e. at a give way, if you can see both ways, you can usually shift down to 2nd, check it, and keep going without stopping if clear.

The difference between the 2 is (other than the road signs themselves) the road markings; give way is broken line IIRC, stop is unbroken line.

In terms of who goes first...that's determined by road position; left turning drivers are on the left side (if there is space), right turning drivers on the right, both can effectively go 'at the same time' if the road is clear.

also known as a Highway or Interstate.

The name freeway evolved from the fact that there are also toll highways.

That said, there are no toll roads in general use in Alabama and the ones that exist are so short there is usually some way around that doesn't lose you much if any time. And what I've seen of toll roads elsewhere in the nation, they are usually in as bad a shape as the public roads, despite the fact that anyone who drives on them has to pay for the privledge.
