I have never been wanted as myself, only what I could do for whoever at the time. I don't know who I even am most of the time. Even when I was a child, I was a hanger-on with my brother and his friends, because all the kids my age really didn't want anything to with me. I am in a perpetual holding pattern until someone asks me for help.

Confidence is obviously not one of my strong suits. Any time I showed confidence when I was growing up, my father told me to stop being arrogant. So I am the opposite of arrogant. I am as submissive and relenting as possible.
I want you guys to understand how different my coming up was from yours and what you would consider "normal". I never really had any friends, I never got invited to parties or had buddies to stop by and pick me up for some running around "just because", the one birthday "party" I can remember was around the time I entered puberty and it lasted exactly one hour. I remember sitting and watching my father do paperwork for his job. Sounds like something that would happen to a 5 year old, right? I was 12. I listened exclusively to an Easy Listening format radio station until I was 14 because I was afraid my father would get upset with me. I didn't get my own room until I was in the 10th grade. Summers away from school were taken up by watching my father's blackberry patch for him as people came and picked them.
My life up to this point has consisted of putting my wants and desires in a box and forgetting them because there was never enough time for them and everything else I had to do. They've been put away so long they've faded away. I've been going to college since I graduated high school in 1996, if I was worth a single damn, I would at least have a Bachelor's. I should be working on a Ph'd for crying out loud. I suck and I'm not going to stop sucking anytime in the near future.

Since I'm in High School my POV might be somewhat skewed but it seems like a good idea on paper.

Lib, I'm 16, and I can't say I'm a social person. I don't go out, because I can't stand smoke and loud music. I rarely get invited to birthday parties. Mind, quite a few of my good friends are girls, and even though my hair's longer then theirs, I don't need an invitation to a slumber party. Still, I'm not going out. I have no hobby's aside from the net and playing bass guitar. As for relationships, there's nothing to tell so far.
On the other hand, if you think of all the fun I can have with classmates just talking and laughing, I think I'm doing quite reasonably. If you just come in to contact with people in school or work you will get friends. You'll meet others as well, once you get a bit more confident.
Looking at it from the other side, what have you got to loose? A girl might laugh at you, sure. Just laugh back and forget about it. Emberassing moments are a part of everyone's life. Even if you grew up more secluded then some, I know people from my class who don't leave the house except for school, but still manage to be sociable during the brakes.
All I can really say is: Good luck, and try to be a bit more confident.
