I 'liked' FS1 but I had played FS2 first and I thought it was/is the coolest game I've ever played.

Better story, music, atmosphere, voice acting (Petrarch/Paglia was class), and ending.

I played FS1 after FS2 and it just seemed really underwhelming. A few things were just lacking and the uselessness of Capital ships in cap ship battles always annoyed me. Yes the beams are a factor.

Obviously thats all just my opinion.

I loved FS1 to death, but even hampered by having the HOTU version of FS2 and lacking the cinemas, command briefing anis, and music, I thought FS2 was better. The storyline was better, with its sudden reversals. (Hey, we're handling these Shivans pretty wel-RAVANA!-Off to Epsilon Pegausi, where the NTF is kicking ou-COLOSSUS!-Back to the nebula, we're doing go-SATHANAS!-Okay, the Sathanas is dead, we're-SATHANI! OMG WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!)
One of the other things that makes FS2 better is, well, you don't feel quite so doomed. You get the sense that you can at least fight the Shivans. Maybe not win, but at least make a fight of it.

And the gameplay...the gameplay was everything I loved about FS1 and more. The captial ships were finally more then just big pieces of destroyable scenery. I was like "OMG L33TN355!" when the Psamtik took down the Belisauris, but it was mission three, with the Psamtik versus those two NTF cruisers, where I was hooked.

I voted for FS2, but there are certainly qualities of FS1 that I enjoy also. Some of the best dogfighting in FS occurs in the FS1 missions before the player gets shields. I also hear people complaining about the uselessness of FS1 capitals, but at the same time in FS2 those ships have lost a lot of their personality (something which is even lost in the later missions).

If the Taranis for instance showed in FS2, the player would think "oh, another Cain. Blam blam blam, boom!". Ships are more important in FS2 because of their beams, but they're also less important because of their reduction to status of mere mission objectives.

Sorry Mad B. You've got the wrong rand. Guess it must be the small 'a'. Its Alan from Ireland.

Back to topic, yeah I guess you didnt get a feel for the aqutaine or psamtic as much as FS1 and the Galatea/bastion but as soon as shields were turned on they became useless. Even with beams they're probably still not as dangerous as to unshielded fighters in FS1.

hmmm.... I seem to have forgotten my point. Probably something like I like beams.

Didnt think much of the collosus though I gotta say.
