Only one death so far. Shouldn't have anything to worry about...

Yeah, we've been in contact with the embassy, and they said they'd had no reports of English Nationals being hurt. But it's really just a waiting game now, till they can get communications back and Mark can get in contact just to set everyone's mind at ease.
It's been a stressfull few days
Edit : Problem is, the Quake was centred on Niigata, which is where my brother is staying.

Yep, that's why the slowest internet connection you can get in Japan is 10Mbit. Their telecomunnications Network is years ahead of everyone elses.
So let's just hope it's easy to fix as well
I expect so, Japan builds with Quakes in mind
I suppose the fact that is most worrying me is that we know the mother of the Tour Guide, and she can't get through to him either.

I hope you're brother's okay Flip.
Kinda OT but some scientists think that the so-called "ring-of-fire" around the Pacific Rim, which has been very quiet in recent decades save the occasional earthquake or eruption, is entering a period of increased activity that will see violent eruptions from volcanos that have been silent for centuries and thus have populations around them(Mt. Rainier for example.)

Yes, I believe St Helens is on the same 'Ring of Fire' is it not? And has recently been showing some activity itself.
Must admit, you have to admire Japan's engineering. The Bullet Train was going at near top speed over the epicentre when it kicked off and no-one was hurt. In the UK trains jump off the rails if Dogs bark at them
