Well, if you figure that a corvette has about half the firepower of a destroyer, well the overall firepower fleet wide hasn't been diminished all that much, but we have to assume that the 13th Vasudan Battlegroup was pretty much hosed, with the remaining ships being folded into the 3rd Fleet for the duration of the conflict. Also, remember that there was a hatshepsut destroyed in endpart1 so we can assume that it was part of the 13th VBG. I think that we can continue with the premise that there are 2-3 destroyers to each Fleet/Battlegroup.

Well, not only the destroyers, though. How many fighter/bomber wings can a Hatshepsut hold? Having all those destroyed two-fold is a severe blow.

How many Hecates were lost? Does anyone know?

You can't really say, because you don;t know how many other ships the GTVa had in the first place, and also which were destroyed.

But the end brief does describe the fleet as decimated, which - based on what the player sees - indicates there weren't that many destroyers around.
I would estimate that the GTVA lost anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 of their Navy from the start of the NTF war to the explosion of Capella. They were very desperate to try to hold off the Shivans and would have sent as much as possible to prevent an invasion.

My personal guess is about 2/5 of the Navy was lost.

Maybe Destroyers are like modern day US Nimitz carriers. How many does America have ? half a dozen ? Imagine how devastating it would be if one were lost.

Well, the fact that they seem to had started mothballing their Orion class ships at the start of the Second Great War.

I think about 3 Destroyers went to the NTF, which suggests one Destroyer fleet per system.

I've always got the feeling from debriefings etc that the GTVA is a large force. Possibly with 7-12 Destroyers at the start of the Second war (both Terran and Vasudan). However, considering the outcome of the First Great War, I suspect that around a quarter of them would be guarding home systems, or on standby duties etc when Capella went boom.

I like the idea of a large Fleet Battle from time to time, as long as your own objectives are clearly marked. Just dropping a fighter into the middle of an enormous beam fight and saying 'Do Something!' is never a good idea. However, the idea of skimming the fire between two groups of heavy ships in order to disable a launch bay or subsystem etc can be quite exhillarating ;)

Hey, despite all their racist overtures, you gotta recognize their skillz. They held off the GTVA's technologically and numerically superior forces for over a year and a half.
