winxp + freespace 2/greatwar?

1
Hey all,

I just rediscovered this game from my old stash of cd's and i would really love to play it, but it seems the game isn't compatible with windows xp. i get a whole bunch of errors when i try to play it (involving fonts and mouse cursor, so i can't read the text, nor can i see the mouse) is there anything i can do to play this game? does anyone know if freespace: the great war is compatible with winxp as well?

I'd love any help i can get, as it was extremely difficult to find a freespace 2 community that's been updated within the past 4 years.

Aha - ye olde GeForce font error. First off, upgrade to 1.2 if you haven't already - that will fix many problems, and should get it running in WinXP - it worked for me. Failing that, try running it in compatability mode for Win 98 or something.

Alternately, you could attempt to download Freespace Open, which is the product of the Source Code Project - essentially, Volition released the source and a massive community effort was undertaken to upgrade the game and fix bugs. It now looks a lot better, has a bunch of cool new features, runs faster (or at least has the potential to, depending on hardware quality and whether you turn on the graphical features) and has basically had a bunch of cool stuff added. Most people use FSO these days, and mods are generally made with it in mind.

Unfortunately, setting it up isn't particularly easy, and the links to most of the files are on another forum, which is currently down. If you're really interested and can't wait though, we could probably find some links for you.

BTW - you're not the 'kaydog' ex of the VBB are you?

Naw, i'm not "kaydog" never played fs2 online, used to have a sucky computer and modem. (i find it kinda weird that I would have to have the latest drivers installed for a 5 year old game... but my drivers are up to date to within the past year)

I've patched to 1.2 and have installed it in win98 compatability mode, and also ran the game in win98 compatibility mode, reinstalled the game multiple times, to the default directory. but i still get these debugging errors

Code: Select all

Error: Could not load animation cursor for the mouse pointer

File:C:\projects\freespace2\code\FREESPACE2\FreeSpace.cpp
Line: 7086

Call stack:

and a bunch of other ones as well. i googled the error online, and found only one site regarding this and it says there's something wrong with teh sparky_fs2.vp file... does anyone have that file and can send it to me?

Does FSO have all the cool movies and cutscenes and all the stuff that the original has?

thanks for all ur help

:| Those are some really weird errors - it's looking for specific files which you should have from the base install, except fopr that font one, which is just plain weird. Sparky.vp is pretty much the core file of the game - it's 254 mb and stores all the ship models, maps, effects, etc. - difficult to send over the net, but not neccesarilly impossible - anyone have any idea where he could get a new VP?

Assuming you didn't download this copy of FS2, possibly from Home of the Underdogs (Don't stress if you did - I'm not looking to get sh###y at you for pirating, it's just that that version is notoriously patchy and might cause stuff like this) I can't think of any way sparky could get messed up like that. If you did, make sure you're running in 640x480 (NB - this can be upgraded to a full 1024x768 res if you're willing to download the additional files), though TBH I've never seen errors like those before. I'm going to assume that since you can't play, you haven't installed any mods or weird files (if you have for some strange reason, get rid of them for the moment).

Hmmm... it's possible a SCP upgrade might fix these errors, though they seem to be related to missing files which- the SCP can play the cutscenes, but unfortunately interplay are a bunch of arseholes who decided they didn;t want to let their precious mve codec out with the Source when it was released, so you'll need avi versions of the cutscenes to watch them. It's one of the few real negative points about the SCP.

Unfortunately, troubleshooting isn't really my area of expertise...

actually, VA sent me a PM a while ago with all the FSO links on it, and i saved it for further reference. JAS, ill go C&P it here...

no idea why its doing that though... sorry. i bought my FS2 a long time ago, works fine for me.

[edit] ok, heres the whole PM (its rather lenghly... but its good:)
ok - from that chat:

to get it working you will need: -FSO 3.6 (from http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/fs2_open_3_6.exe ) -the media VP (from http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mediavps/mv_zpack.exe or download bits of it from here: http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/ ... genumber=5 )
-the launcher 5 (from http://www.randomtiger.pwp.blueyonder.c ... ncher5.rar) the launcher is needed to enable all the features of FSO
Once they're all downloaded and ALL put in your main FS2 directory, run the launcher. Through the launcher, you set which features you want enabled, and tick them in the 'Features' menu.

So, d/l the media vp from here: http://fs2source.warpcore.org/mediavps/mv_zpack_a.exe since you'll need it, put it in your Games/FreeSpace2 folder along with the launcher and the FS_Open 3.6 exe file.

Then run the launcher (you'll only need to do all this once), go to the 'browse' button top right, select 'fs2_open_3_6.exe' (the FS_Open 3.6 exe).
Then, go to the features tab and choose 'graphics' from the 'list type' drop-down menu. tick the following:

Specular

Glowmaps

32bit textures

jpg,tga textures

Models instead of ani

Disable vertical sync

Stops fog intersect hull

Then select gameplay from the list type menu and uncheck both the flags in there.
In dev tool, select only -fps so you can see your framerate in-game.
In the 'custom flags' text box, enter '-ambient_factor 85' and click ok.
And that should just about do it for the features tab. The other tabs are like the original launcher, so i'm fairly sure you can figure it all out from there.
Once done, click ok, and then run to get ingame, and after creating a new pilot, you enjoy a really beautiful new FS
i hope that helps :) FSO is really a work of art.

wow that looks like a whole load of trouble to get fso working like the original. (i have the original fs2 cd's, not the underdog version). maybe it's been stored so long, some data from the installation disc got corrupted. that tends to happen wit my cd's. just to clarify, the sparky files are there... just for some odd reason, prolly some lines of code got messed up or something, so they give me these errors. (i like the one that says "go see john". =P) i guess i'll actually go try to find someone with a disc 1 or an image of a disc1.

Doesn't the FTP server have copies of the original FS2 VPs on it? Replacing the installed files with working copies might do the trick.
A.K.A. Mongoose, for you HLP denizens

FSO isnt hard to setup, all that is actually about 5 minutes of work. and its well worth it! all you do is put the launcher, FSO, etc in the main dir and then run the aluncher, the rest is self-explanitory.

Yep it does. Unfortunately I can't remember the link off the top of my head.
