Re: Freespace Files Inquiries

UPDATE: The repository feature of FS FILES has completely broken so it has been temporarily disabled. I am not sure what is wrong with it - it's throwing all sorts of errors it shouldn't. It might have something to do with nginx - I will spend some free time each day until I find the problem, but no promises on the ETA yet.

Speaking of FSFiles, I thought about whether the current content could be archived. These days
-Knossos has the most up-to-date version of all campaigns
-EffectsDB has the largest compilation of effects ( https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index ... ic=94951.0 )
-ShipsDB still has almost every ship ever released ( https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index ... ic=94364.0 )
In particular the updated versions of the latter 2.

Also, in case you want to update FSFiles, here's something ngld ( https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index ... msg1862064 ) made: https://dev.tproxy.de/viewer/
I had no idea how it could be put to use back then but it may or may not be useful for FSFiles

I will not be doing anything new with FS Files nor touching it up any further. It will either be replaced or usurped by another site. But likely it will remain in place. FS Files is purely an archive at this point, it serves no future project purposes except as a storage option. It will not be integrated with anything else.

The main site, Sectorgame, will also get a new homepage with a blog of somesort. It won't be part of the other sites but it could be used for FS project related news.

A new, potentially similar to FS FIles site with the functionality of Freespace 2 Sector / FS Mods is the idea at the moment. Shiv is working on something to this end, so far I am not involved in that.

Hey So there are a few things to tackle:

1. Ship viewer: I love this previewer that Ngld made. I’dlove to integrate it with sectorfiles2 project that I’m working on. I’m afraid however, that’d have to wait until some update. The community was living without proper mod hosting solution for so many years that I have decided the goal is to relatively quickly roll out a well written base solution, that’d feature image previews in v1. For an update version Ngld’s solution will be definitely taken into project scope

Is there any documentation how to integrate it?

2. Effects/Music/anythign else dbs: My hosting solution will allow just to upload such db/dump and download the entire zip file. I think a better option would be to split those files into smaller packages, take screenshots and upload them to the new file hosting with screenshots of the contents that will be previewed for each package.

3. Name: @Hunter? Is it OK if we stick to the new name „sectorfiles2”? It’d be a good tribute to the Sectorgame’s legacy :)

Why not just call it Sectorfiles? I barely remember Sectorfiles being a thing, but apparently there was a side-project called Sectorfiles and it essentially was just an FTP for mods. And if its called Sectorfiles, does that mean there will be categories OTHER than Freespace? ;) I split hairs, I know..

See the Descent Mission Archive for example, very simple and gets the job done: https://sectorgame.com/dxma/
But populating a new site with older content could be tricky as FS Files doesn't contain any descriptions.

My idea wasnt too different from the current FSFiles. Basically just
_FSFiles_Archive folder, containing the current data, including a note of its history and a heads up that the files are likely outdated
EffectsDB folders
ShipsDB folders

If there's a better way to view everything than just directories I'd be happy about that, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to have it look in a good way. Also, the data set is vast by now... for ships I could imagine it being useful to link to the FSWiki page, but any kind of info system for the effects would be difficult. It's probably better to just provide the whole set and have people look through the files themselves rather than clicking a ton of preview images, leave alone the effort it'd take to make them....
Internet Archive has a decent set of multimedia preview features but compared to just skipping through files in IrfanView or Winamp it's already a downgrade IMHO.

Nope, you gotta ask ngld about that.
