Ok, this seems to actually infect web-pages and redirects links to dummy pages for inputting card details etc, it's a bit nasty

Well, this one seems to be working with the intention of capturing finance information, which is a bit more sinister. Most 'Hackers' are usually little more than grunts who know how to type astalavista.com, it's the few who release stuff like this that are more dangerous.

astalavista.com?

Yes, it's a rather odd site, kind of self contradictory, it has security and anti-virus advice at the bottom and something claiming to be a warez search engine at the top.
It mainly seems to consist of people who think that being on a security site automatically makes them 'security' experts

So this one infects webservers?

This one could be nasty. I think I'm going to go update my system in a few hours, when I'm really up.
Where do these assholes get this crap, and for that matter, why can't Microsoft put out a secure operating system?
That last part is purely rhetorical, by the way.

Well most of my stuff is backed up on a slave drive, which to date has never had a virus (most slave drives don't get them - Sssh). In the meantime I'm activating two firewalls, both running at the same time.

You know if there's a decent firewall available off Sourceforge or otherwise freely available to the public?
I'm not interested in shelling out the kind of cash (I don't have) for total security, but blocking the nearly routine and asinine attempts might not be a bad idea.

That's nice, but I'm quite content.

I'm reasonably sure that you misunderstood what I said. I'm interested in acquiring a firewall for myself, enough to stop the some of the routine crap that I think was occasionally hitting me back at college.

While I'm sure you had a reason, that came across as totally random

Perhaps he looked at Sourceforge and thought it was Sectorgame? Mmm.. they say your eyes good worse as you get older, but damn.
