Getting back into 3D design

It's been a few years since I did any hardcore 3D modelling - Seeing as I'd like to expand my job prospects in the future I think getting back into this might have some benefits down the road.
At the very least I can have some fun with it. I always did have a passion for 3D design but never really went far with that. My question is: What is a good 3D kit to learn these days?
I know (knew) of Blender, 3D Studio etc.. But it's been quite a few years so everything has changed. Any recommendations?

Not all that much has really changed I reckon. Blender is still free, and has a tonne of tuts. VA swears by it, as do lots of others. Also, apparently the interface has gotten alot more intuitive in the more recent versions.

I can't comment on 3DS Max past version 8, but AFAIK it's still broadly the same program it's always been - whatever you remember should still apply.

3ds Max has introduced a new material editor which is a pain in the arse to use.

Otherwise can't say much - I have the newest one but have never really used it.
