Does anyone know this author?
Apparently he's doing a talk at an informatics conference I'm attending in May.

The Sci-fi writer? What is he doing at a computing based conference?

To quote the website
Ken MacLeod is an award winning Scottish science fiction writer. The technical themes of his books encompass singularities, divergent human cultural evolution and post-human cyborg-resurrection. MacLeod's general outlook can be best described as techno-utopian socialist, though unlike a majority of techno-utopians, he has expressed great scepticism over the possibility and especially over the desirability of Strong AI.
He graduated from Glasgow University with a degree in zoology, has worked as a computer programmer and written a masters thesis on biomechanics.

Ah, a Scottish like yourself but cynical like your old man...
Why was he invited for a talk? I'm intrigue and want to go see what he's going to present and discuss

How much does it cost to get to the conference?

Yes! I'm ashamed to say I haven't read MacLeod, but he is a big name often mentioned in the same sentences as Iain Banks and Alastair Reynolds.

It's free for Edinburgh PhD students.
Not sure it'll fit in your busy schedule though
