This was already mentioned a lot of times before in the shoutbox, but there seems to be no change. Bots still keep coming in. How about enabling admin verification for new members? Or something.

I haven't seen a single one. Though that may be because half the active members here are moderators of some sort.

Check out the latest registered user. And those kind of bots keep registering.

I think all admin verification does is allow the user to post. It doesn't actually change registration.
A better CAPTCHA would probably do the trick.

Wouldn't that mean that updating the forum would be necessary?

Assuming phpbb2 is the same as pbpbb3, admin verification prevents the account from existing, period. Only admins see unverified accounts, and only in the ACP.
A better CAPTCHA wouldn't require an update so much as a mod. However I have my doubts as to how updated any CAPTCHA mod for phpbb2 would be.

At the moment it's set to 'admin verification', so they can't post at all. We are seeing an increase in bot traffic on the site. As for the captcha thing, there is one installed but it doesn't seem to work properly so I disabled it. Not sure where to go now.

Admin Verification doesn't prevent the account being visible in phpbb2? That's a shame.

Would it be hard to add in a couple simple questions, like which ocean is between Europe and North America, etc?

I can change all of the questions if that would help. Not sure what the deal with the Captcha bug is, though. I will have to start digging into the code.

It's a problem with the way phpbb2 verifies sessions I believe. As far as I know the bug was never fixed in phpbb2, and still existed into early versions of phpbb2.

Incidentally, if you give me the ability, I shall be willing squash pornobots like an ickle wickle fly. I will not even abuse this power, except in extreme cases of mild boredom.

I tried banning one, but I'm not used to phpBB Admin stuff, so I'm not sure if I did it right...

Best just to delete them entirely, banning is kind of useless as it doesn't delete the user.
