Are there any good ones that don't need you to re mortgage in order to buy them?

Yes! Manufacture your own? :P

Why boys always like having fancy joysticks?

Depends, do you want a tight grip, loose grip, force feedback, etc?

...so...many....smutty....jokes.....

In all honesty, it's not too important. I'd like a moulded (i.e. ergonomic - I'm a lefty, but pretty much attributed to using these things with the other hand) with force feedback, but AFAIK neither combination exists in a sub 40 quid joystick.

The most important thing is to have a decent bit of weight - my current one is a big lump of cheap feeling plastic. The problem is that no-one stocks joysticks any more, so it's impossible to actually judge stuff like the quality of the manufacturing material, or the play on the trigger button, etc.

It's also weird that there are more features in my 6 year old stick - which is fine except for Win7 driver problems - than most new ones.

I'm thinking one of these at the mo;

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Speedlink-SL-66 ... omputers_2
Pro: separate throttle, apparently is decently put together, not too many buttons, vibrates
Con: might not even use the throttle (I'm left handed... RH joysticks are fine for me, not sure on this arrangement), might be too small (width), no twist control (semi-important)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrustmaster-T- ... omputers_2
Pro: can split the throttle bit, lots of buttons
Con: too many buttons, no rumble, bit pricey maybe, Ps3 also

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrustmaster-Fl ... cp_vg_h__3
Pro: looks pretty hefty (based on weight), has all the bits required
Con: no rumble, PS3 also

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-942-00 ... b_title_vg
Pro: again, looks decently made based upon weight
Con: no rumble

EDIT:
I used to have one of these in the late 90s - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Logitech-Wingman- ... 35af116f99

It was great.

You'd be surprised. I can show you my joystick some day, you'll be amazed what it can do!

I don't play computer games that require a joystick :D

Sidewinder 3d Pro, Sidewinder Precision Pro

They use optical pickups on for the joystick positioning tracking.

Not on sale any more, though, at least in the UK.

I threw out a precision pro only last year....I should have kept it, for nostalgia if nothing else.

Logitech 3D Pro has quite a bit of weight to it, maybe give that one a feel. ;)

Ebay dood... That or your local variant of Craigslist. Actually. I should have an extra sidewinder kicking around here somewhere... Lemme double-check.
