Very interesting experiment indeed. Excellent example of plasticity and adaptability of plants.

If I remember correctly, a lot of the plants in Kew were collected by Joseph Hooker when he was on a three year Himalaya expedition.

I'm pretty sure it was mentioned heavily during the Falkland's War as the Royal Navy used it for resupply.

Don't know if you're old enough for that to be why you remember it though. :p
