So, I find this great video card, and NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS factory overcloaked to 720 MHz for 45$. A bargain, right? Except it's about 4" too wide for my case.

But fear not! I have found a case that's plenty big, AND comes with a 600W power supply, for 100$. Only one question remains...

Is it possible to remove everything from the old case and put it in a new one?

Also, as a side question, would my computer object to me removing the modem hogging up one of my PCI-e slots?

Should be relatively easy-peasy to remove everything from old-to-new as long as they have the same form factor (usually ATX).

Dunno why you'd have a problem removing a modem - other than the video card (for obvious reasons), I don't think there's any other kind of PCI card you can't remove. Might want to uninstall drivers first, though.

I thought I was seeing things when I read this on here then on PD. Removing the modem is easy. Uninstall, then take out. As for the case - Be sure to get the right kind. You might want to take it to a Mom and Pop store to get a better evaluation incase you make the wrong choice.

I once made a schoolboy error and bought a case that was, frankly, more of a server than a desktop tower. Not that this was a bad thing - I wanted something which bagloads of space anyways, and I'd rather have used it than paid for the mail return to dabs.com - but the problem was that it couldn't fit into my desk. D'oh!

Well in those instances I usually put it beside, above or under the desk. To hell with aesthetics.

Ah, it was truly a hellishly big case and an equally hellishly big desk (seriously, I've never had anything so big before or since*). Like, about waist height.

I have (had) a big desk too, it takes up half of my room back home. My mum complained about it every time she saw it.

Form Factor?

Form factor basically refers to the design of the motherboard; there's a bunch of (in effect) standard sizes/shapes - most popular is ATX, there's also micro-ATX (for mini PCs) and, I think, BTX (which I think was a not-very-successful Intel-attempt at a new standard, ostensibly for cooling purposes).

Anyways, point is, if you have an ATX motherboard in general any ATX case should be the right size for it. That said, the cheapest and smallest cases may be too small in certain cases if you have a lot of components. Also, they could be poor for airflow.

No, but I can find out later.

As for being small... LOL, I plan on getting a plenty big case.

Unless you got a P2, its ATX, so you shouldn't have any problems with getting a good case.
