CIH's sorry attempts at Modding HostileWaters

I've decided to be Mr Pioneer and fiddle with an old game no seems to remember. Well apart from maybe Flip anyway.

From my FS experience, I figure all the interesting stuff is hidden away in compressed folders. Looking in the directory on C-drive there's nothing there of consequence so I took a look through the CD.

I figure the bigger files have the interesting stuff. Those being .cob and .mng.

How do you sauppose I find out what I could use to read those as I've never heard of 'em ?

mng and cob are 3d models

no data/secrets to be found there other than polygons

whoops, that should have been ".cab"

WinRar should be able to handle any .cab that isn't corrupted, though that's one interesting cease-and-desist notice in the screenshot. You might need to try unzipping it with an older OS and/or version of WinZip.

Nope, RAR doesn't do it.

Actually, this may all be irrelevant anyway as my mis-firing PC has develped .dll errors and I'm getting odd behaviour. If I try to launch Thief2, for example, I get a weird "Ypu're card isn't compatible with Thief2" message. Hostile Waters launches with the screen splash image then simply stops. No CtD, nothing. The old trick of removing the GPU, and reinserting it into the AGP slot isn't working either.

Time to bin the mutha, i think. Can't be arsed with my PC anymore. Most of my (older) favourite games stopped working after I upgraded from my Geforce4MX and I haven't got the dosh for either an old-skool cheapo rig or a shiney new one. Well I have, but I'd rather buy a car with the money instead.

I'll see your "Don't remember Hostile Waters" and raise you an "also remember Carrier Command, the game it is obviously based on" :p

I had a look through the files associated with the game some time ago, nearly all of it is in a proprietary format, without either the source code, or a heck of a lot of number crunching, I don't think it's going to be very easy to mod Hostile Waters at all :(

Which is really sad cause the game was brilliant.

Just like Incoming you can't mod it. It's made by Rage?

Yep. Interestingly enough Rage said that they had a multiplayer patch ready but Interplaywent bust before the release and due to legal reasons they could never release it.

I found this very interesting.

Looks like a similar situation to FS3....

Hostile Waters! I don't believe anyone remembers that game! I lost my disc a couple of years ago.

If I'm playing with PCs, maybe I should try to resurrect my old 1ghzAthlon/TNT2 rig as It's been sitting around for a couple of years doing nowt.

Last time I checked it had no power so may just need a PSU. Should make a handy Retro-Rig. Maybe a new hard-drive (iirc it has 10gig) and some system RAM (no idea on that one).

Well, had a quick play with my old rig. 'think it's a PSU issue as it fails to get as far as BIOS beeps. Just kinda "turns over", with the fans whizzing.

Anyway, gave up on that as I can't be ased ripping the PSU from my other comp so went back to my newer rig.

Reinstalled all the GFX card drivers (for like the 5th time) and trimmed the edge of the metal tab which appeared to foul the edge of the motherboard so it sits much better in the AGP slot.

Much better already.
