I'm trying to burn TV-RIPS (MPG/XVID whatever) onto a DVD - As in, turn them into DVD format with a menu and the whole lot. The problem is - After spending hours recording them, when they play back, about half way through the first episode the audio starts losing sync until eventually the picture and audio are out of sync by about 5 seconds. It's really annoying. I thought it was because I compressed them, so I tried an uncompressed disc and the same result. I'm guessing it's to do with the codecs or something, but... any pointers?

No idea, but this has happened to me before. It's not limited to DVD format, as it has happened in VCD format to me too.

When you play back the TV-RIPS normally do they have problems?

All I can suggest is try using TMPGEnc for encoding the MPG/XVID files into a format for DVD and then burning it

Which brings up another topic, does anyone know of anything more efficient at transcoding than Nero? One hour for a SVCD and several hours for a DVD pisses me off.

One of the issues I have is space, I can only fit one 45 minute episode on a 4.7GB DVD. That just dosen't seem right, compressing doesn't seem to save much either..

Hey steady on - change those quality settings young man! Long Play should let you have three 45 min episodes on a standard DVD.

Hm. Can't see that option. I'm using PAL remember.
