Problemo

I'm looking for the handy dandy VP Construction Suite that karajorma referenced in his FAQ but, (not to sound mean) like half the other links in his FAQ, its broken :(

Karajorma, i don't suppose you have a WORKING link? :)

And also, as many of you know i'm making a shivan campaign. After discovering a bug in FS2 that allows you to use Shivan weapons when no terran/vasudan ships are in the mission, i decided to just screw working my way around things and make a good chunk of the shivan ships player-flyable. There is nothing wrong with this except for 2 things:

- No tech animations
- No icons

Currently i'm just having them all use the SF_Mara icons and animations, but is there some way i could obtain a tech animation, and icons if some has already made them? (i can make my own icons if need be).

And one last thing, someone posted some shivan head animations, but i can't find them. Any clues?

I have some of the Shivan comm anis, but they're for SA...I could dig them out however.

Hope nobody screams at me. :p

EDIT: I think SA has tech anis for the Nahema too. Just make people use the new auto loadout-icon generation feature for everything else.

SA? Explanation? :P

Other post:

lol, i already have started editing tablefiles (as you probably now know from my other post). I WANT to do that, but uh, i can't model... Heres a list of all the things that i could add in to make it seem cooler (prioritized):

- Ship Icons
- Weapon Icons
- Ship Animations
- Weapon Animations
- Shivan Speech (Working on it)
- Shivan talking headz (already made by someone, need 2 find....)
- Shivan Main Hall
- Special Tech Entries

If anyone wants to help, feel free. I also looked up hidden threat, (by accidentally finding it through google, its forum is hidden :P), but its definatly dead. Is the creator of that campaign still alive and if so could i contact him?

SA=Scroll of Atankharzim. It's hosted on HLP, I'm staff.

Ship loadout icons can be autogenerated by FSO now from the ingame models. Same for missiles. Guns you're still stuck making your own (unless Lightspeed's Shivan weapons pack includes them, which IIRC it doesn't...)

I write Tech Entries. What do you need?

Thankzee! The shivan dialog is going nicely. I've got some preliminary stuff that will do for now.

As for FS2_Open generating those icons, could you generate them in FSO, then give me the .ani files so i can put it in the normal one? I'd like to keep this campaign retail-compatible. That and i don't have FS2_open (it does weird things) and my friend can't use it because it screws up his campaign thing... so yeah...

Thanks! :D

I misphrased; it basically makes loadout icons by rendering the ingame model, not making a new ani. :/

hmmm, ok, could you go in and take a screenie of the icons? :D If you need my mission and files and stuff just ask.

EDIT: I found the VP maker!

AAARRRRRGGGHHHHHH

Could someone tell me why my VP file's contents won't overwrite FS2's? Namely, the table files? Do i have to do something special?

Where are you putting the VP? What's it called?

shivansalone.vp, i'm putting in missions, a campaign file, 4 head anis for the messages, 6 audio clips in voices/persona, and 2 table files, weapons.tbl and ships.tbl

I sent it to a friend and it didn't overwrite the tables. Also, even when i gave him the tables manually, on 2 missions he got stuck with an enrynes instead of a mara. Which is really, really bizzare.

And also, while editing a mission with notepad, i somehow managed to f### it up so bad that it now crashes FRED upon loading. This is new. :|

You have to knock out the FS2 tables entirely. The simplest method is to go into the data folder and rename the original tables folder to "1tables" or something like that so FS2 no longer recognizes it.

And IIRC, it works through the VPs by alphabetical order, so try renaming your vp with a 1 in front and see if that helps.

And you no doubt stuck it in the main FS2 folder right? IF you're using FS2_Open that is so the wrong thing to do as you should be using the mod system. (See my FAQ on how to install FS2_Open mods).

If you're using retail the problem is that the game looks in Root_fs2.vp first. Name the VP something that comes alphabetically before that and it will work.

Not really. It's fairly easy to FUBAR a mission with notepad. I always backup a mission before editing with notepad because of exactly how easy it is to do this.

However it is probably fixable. You have a few options.

1) If you haven't used FRED much since you got the problem take a look at your backup.00x files. Look at the last modified date for them. You want to find the one closest to when you screwed things up.
Rename that file and change the extension to .fs2.
2) Find the .bak file for the mission. Compare the last modified date against the renamed backup file. Rename that one and change it's extension too.

Now open those files in FRED and see how much you've lost. If it's acceptable you're fine. If not what you should do is open the newest one side by side with the crashing version in notepad. That way you should be able to determine what is causing the crash.

I already fixed it...

Anywayz i'll rename it to aloneshivans.vp and see if that works.
