stem cells again...

A COALITION of patients and researchers have joined a Liberal backbencher's call for the Government to trigger a conscience vote on the future of therapeutic cloning in Australia.
...
It said a recent Roy Morgan Poll showed 80 per cent of Australians supported therapeutic cloning.
...
"For a cabinet holding some extreme minority to view to impose that position on the rest of the population is totally unjustified," he said.
...
Dr Washer said it was "total, utter, psychotic rubbish" that a life form at the point of fertilisation had the same rights as a human because it was impossible to differentiate between placenta and human tissue for 14 days.
...
Meanwhile, the Victorian and Queensland premiers today stepped up their call for a broadening of stem cell research, saying they might go it alone without federal backing.
Quite interesting...
I do hope progress is made towards better medical understanding of stem cells and the possible benefits to the science. :)
(I'd rather not have the whole debate again, but it is an interesting piece of news none the less)

I'm just very glad our government has a relatively sane position on it. One of very few things our government has a sane position on, sadly. Possibly the only thing.

I'm a bit out of the loop.
We're one of only 3 (apparently) EU countries who allow cloned stem-cell research, including government funding (although there have been calls for further funding, including an independent charitable foundation to be set up).

This is neat. I do not see anything bad about cloning stem cells as long as not for bad intention or harm anyone.

By the way, what kind of name is "Mal Washer"? Are you a "Bad Washer" or "Good Washer"?
