Beyond the SCP and Upgrade Project?

Ok, this is really just a testing of the waters here, it's unlikely my thoughts are going to turn in this direction until at least late next year..

We are approaching a point,, I feel, where the SCP projects work, especially if Shaders, Lua Scripting and New particle effects are implemented, where the FS2 engine could effectively be used as a basis for writing a completely new combat game using none of [V]'s IP whatsoever.

I am basically talking about a home-grown project where the design team create the universe and storyline by themselves, create their own models etc

I am not talking about a direct competitor to Ferrium here, I am talking about using the SCP Engine to do what some of us (i.e. me) have always wanted to do and lacked the skill to. The storyline would be cross-developed by all members and final decisions will be made by at least 2 people, I have 2 in mind if they are interested.

As I said at the start, this is a long long way in the future, at the very least after TI is finished. But I just thought I'd test the waters.

The reason I have asked on here is because what I would consider the 'core' of the people I personally would choose to involve are here :-

Hunter :- Good organiser, Musician and Special effects etc
Black Wolf :- Brilliant attention to detail, good head for a storyline, Excellent Fredder etc.
Karajorma :- Fredder extrordinaire, Organiser, good knowledge of FS2 engine
Goober :- Code Master, knows the SCP as well as anyone + Modeller/Fredder.
Aldo + Taristin :- Good Modellers/Texturers, imaginative.
Vasudan Admiral :- Modeller extraordinaire.

And those are just the people and skills that come off the top of my head, I know Moonsword is a good Fredder, etc, but I'm just bouncing ideas around.

Anyway, if, late next year, I were to look at doing this, who would be interested in getting involved? I think it would be fun to take the engine and just let our imagination run wild ;)

An interesting idea indeed...but doomed to either failiure, or a very, very late release date, as it would suffer the same thing every internet project seems to: sheer laziness and interference from real life.

That said, I'd be willing to help, but the only thing im remotely usefull for atm is a bit of writing/story stuff, at most >_<

Hehehehe, well, your definitions of 'remotely good' at and mine must differ greatly, you are excellent at the stuff you write :)

It's true that a massive undertaking like this would take a great deal of hard work, and dedication, judging by my experiences with TI stuff until a couple of weeks ago, I am just as vulnerable as everyone else ;)

I guess that's why I'm testing the waters early, but by late next year, a whole load of things can happen and this may never get mentioned again ;)

I suppose I'm just asking who is interested in the idea, so that, if I do find myself able to commit for this, I would know whether it would be worth fishing around for people at the time.

If I'm free I'd be happy to help with this. I do have a few prior commitments that need to be finished first though.

That said I was supposed to be working on the last community project that was proposed over here and only missed it when SectorGame had it's big outage (by the end of which TI had become simply one cool campaign amongst many).

I keep telling you that my version of MG Mission 1 probably wouldn't have been very different from the one you made so don't put down your FREDding abilities :)

I'm flattered you condiser me good enough to be lumped with Aldo. I honestly can't say how things will be next year this time. I suspect It'll be a mad scramble for more credit hours so I can try to graduate with my Bachelors, but on the plus side; Machina Terra should be done by then. Maybe Goober'll revive TVWP by then, though, too. Who knows. Contact me in a year, if I do in fact stick around/live that long.

Does the community really need another big, ambitious project ?

The community is an ambitious project ;)

And yes, it will always need them, as some draw to a close, new ones will take their place, if it isn't this idea, which, is still a very definite possibility, it will be something else, by someone else. ;) Besides, it's something unique, the closest example is the B5 Total conversion, and that still must limit itself to certain design techniques and styles to fit the game.

I think being given the complete freedom to, for example, create an entirely new set of ships for an entirely new race would be quite interesting. Possibly not having to think canon every step of the way would make things move more smoothly?

Assuming I don't change hobby-wise too much in a year or so, I'd certainly be interested. :)
As fun as HTLing canon ships is, designing and realising ones own designs is far more rewarding. I can imagine thinking up a whole new set of design ethics would be even more interesting.

That and I've always wanted to help create a seemless universe as possible (solid story with no plot holes, thoroughly thought out technologies and above all fun gameplay).

So, yeah - I think I'd help. :)
