Greetings...

I've played Descent a long time ago, and there's some questions I'd like to ask.

1. Are there any relationship between the Descent 1-3 games and the novel series authored by Peter Telep?
2. In the CD versions of the first two games, are there any differences between the audio tracks and the in-game midi songs?
3. What's the relationship between Descent and Descent:Freespace and Descent to Undermountain.

Just want to know.

All right, I'll give these a shot:

1. The Descent novels are based on the storyline explained in the games, but they're more complex and expand upon the games. (As you can imagine, a book based on finding 27 keys/reactors/exits wouldn't exactly be a good read. ) For instance, almost all of the first Descent novel takes place on the lunar mine, but it's greatly expanded. The second novel, Stealing Thunder, is based on the events of D2, culminating with the alien structure at Tycho Brahe. The third novel, Equinox, is derived from the events of D3's story, including things like PTMC headquarters and the attack on Red Acropolis. They're definitely worth a read if you can find a copy, though if you're on the younger side, be warned that there are some mature themes (sex, violence, etc.).

2. D1's CD version is exactly the same as the floppy version; there was no redbook audio on it. (The PS1 version of D1 had remixed versions of the original game's MIDI files.) D2 had an amazing industrial metal redbook soundtrack in addition to its normal MIDI tracks.

3. There's no storyline relationship between Descent and Freespace, other than a few of the same star system names being used (and the easter egg of Dravis' Diary in a cargo container in an FS2 mission ). Volition, FreeSpace's developer, and Outrage, who developed D3, were once both part of Parallax Software, who made D1 and D2. When FreeSpace was released, there was a disk compression utility already using that name, so they added the Descent prefix (this also cashed in on the success of the Descent series); the game was called Conflict: FreeSpace in Europe. The second FreeSpace game doesn't include Descent in the title. As for Descent to Undermountain, I know very little about it, but I believe that it doesn't have much to do with the Descent series, outside of the name.

Do you know where I can find a copy of the Descent they made for PlayStation? It'd be really cool to have, though annoying since there's no Guide-Bot. Not fun.

I just happened to find my copy in the bargain bin of a Gamestop. You might be able to rustle up a copy on Amazon or eBay, as well.

Descent to Undermountain used D1's engine. IIRC that and the stealing of the name are the only connections between it and the Descent franchise.
