Sometimes when I boot my computer up, the BIOS comes up thinking the computer is an Athlon 1150mhz (its a XP2000). I have to go into the BIOS settings to change it back again. Also, sometimes it thinks its a Duron 1050mhz, and the only way to change that is to pull the power and wait a few seconds before starting up!

I love my compy! :P

Isn't the BIOS 'sposed to save info like that ? (fear the knowledge)

sometimes. IIRC, you can either save your specific FSB, multiplier, etc values or let the BIOS auto-detect on startup.

It could be just a faulty / low battery, but I doubt it. The clocks fine, and it only seems to occur once every so often. Are computers capable of getting colds? :P

Hunty, I get that too on both of my machines. Like you said, every so often. They are identical, being powered by Athlon 1800 XP's.

It also resets the clock and turns off SMART for hard disks, strangely enough.

We've tried changing batteries but that seems to have no effect :?

I sometimes don't notice it at first, but the giveaway sign is when none of my USB devices are working. Then I reboot and notice the changed CPU. Probably just the cheapness shining through :P

Yeah.

Do you know which motherboard you have?

It's too embarrasing to say. So we'll leave it there. ;)

For god sake, Hunty :P Is it a K7S5A?

You might check the battery on the motherboard. There's a small battery that sometimes goes dead, causing the machine to lose its BIOS settings.

I had a BIOSTAR once. That thing sucked. The AGP slot's casing broke, and the video card fried out a few wires on the bottom of the mobo......

then the PSU went out and somehow fried the rest of it.
