Hi all.

I decided recently to dig out my copy of Freespace 2, and despite the game's age found it as good as ever... except for one problem.

My afterburners don't work! Whe I push the button (either TAB, or button 6, or whatever) it makes a short noise and accelerates me as if i pushed 'A' to accelerate forwards, but there's no screen shake and I don't go any faster than normal. It's as if I'm out of fuel permanently.

I can't work out what could be making it do this or how to fix it. Has anyone else had this problem?

I've wondered if it could be WinXP, my ATI radeon 9800, or some driver issue, but I don't see how it could cause this problem...

Please tell me if you know of a solution because I'm dying to get back into this game (ridiculous given how old it is!)

Thanks in advance,
olilan.

What you need to do is go into your Main Freespace folder and find a file called FS2.exe

Now, right click on that file and select Properties.
Click on the compatability tab, and select Windows98 for the compatability mode.

This ought to fix the problem :)

Welcome! I advise you to download Freespace_open. We can nopw do things like this !

Thanks for the tip, Shinobi! I've downloaded fs2_open and it looks good. But it seems to have reset my save game (stats are still there, but campaign starts from the beginning). Is fs_open compatible with existing FS2 saves?

Cheers,
olilan.

I think it should be compatible. use the -allslev flag in the launcher and that'll give you all the levels to any campaign you currently have open. Make sure you download the media VP as well as everything cool suddenly becomes more apparent with that in place. :p

Lightspeed has also redone most of the planets and weapons (the hornets in the above shot are his) so make sure you have a peek. :D

Stick around as well because we're on the brink of releasing our demo campaign Operation Ragnarok.

Freespace 2 lives on....

Thanks for the tip - I love this game after all these years and had the same afterburner problem until I read this thread.

Where does one download the FS2 open file and mediaVP files, do they reside in the Freespace2 folder, and can they be used with the existing launcher and existing retail campaign?

Is there a FAQ on this FS open? Even now in 2004, there still is nothing like it and it doesn't look dated!!!

Just look what the SCP can do to *your* copy of FS2. Then talk about FS2 being outdated

The SCP is just as good (if not better) as any modern games you might come across...

Unfortunately, it's not really compatible. In theory, it is, but not creating new FSO pilots has led to some problems for some people. If you're only interested in accessing the missions rather than your stats though, Shinobi's right - allslev is the way to go.
