Okay, I did a search and didn't turn up anything, so if I somehow missed the answer I did at least try to find it.

My question is this: how does the single-player military rank system work? I've tried racking up extra cap-ship kills, tried concentrating on getting all the allied pilots home safe, and so on, but I just can't figure out what it is that gets the promotions. Anyone know what scoring system the game uses to determine this? Most of the games I play I get to the end with only 2, maybe three promotions.

Blow stuff up. Points are awarded to the person who gets the kill based on the size and strength of your target (it's all predefined on the table). I think (But I'm b no means certain) that bumping up the difficulty also bumps up points.

But promotions are hard to get in FS2 - they're designed so that if you keep the same player for awhile (presumably playing multiple user campaigns) you'll very gradually get promoted.

On the bright side, they don;t actually mean anything - you're not actually missing out on any part of the game because of your low rank. They're just nice decorations for your medal box.

There is an advantage to having a high rank, in Multi-player you can bar people below a certain rank from joining your game.

However, hardly anyone ever does this, since most people are just ensigns and it pretty easy to bump your rank up if you have any FRED and Campaign editting tools.

You can bump your single player rank easily. Multiplayer rank should only increase during validated missions so FREDding won't help you there.
