Is it better to go for a ORE mining barge, or one of the Cruiser classes etc.

Hmm, Cruisers are probably best for beginners.

As for the Raven setup, heres a setup for the average user:
High:
4x Siege Launchers
2x Cruise Launchers
2x Heavy Nosferatu
Med:
2x Large Shield Boosters (Named or Tech2)
1x EMP Hardener
1x Thermal Hardener
1x Kinetic Hardener
1x Shield Boost Amp
Low:
3x Power Diagnostics
2x Balistic Controls
Named equipment where possible. TECH2 ofcourse, is bloody hard to afford - But great to use.
Also you can setup the Raven for ULTIMATE Offense, but have very limited defense:
High:
6x Siege Launchers
2x Medium Nosferatu
Med:
1x 100mn MWD
1x Scrambler
4x Sensor Dampeners
Fill the lowslots with ballistic controls.
The Raven is the king at tanking, and since the patch it's no longer viable to use EW on it - So the above setups work in PVP too, but there is a whole ton of setups we can cover if you like.
High:

Got a new Frigate.
A Caldari Griffin.
Once I get lvl3 Frigate, I'll grab a Merlin.
Then upgrade some, and work towards a Cruiser.

Ah. The Griffin is a nice EW frigate. Its only drawback is that is suffers from the same terrible capacitor that all Caldari frigates do.

Yeah I found that. Though its hardly a major issue when I'm outfitted with a missile, rocket launcher and a 125mm rail gun.

Nah, I've already bought a Merlin. Its just sitting there waiting for me to get Lvl 3 frigate.

Just picked up a nice Caldari Cormorant Destroyer.

Rails and a launcher. Probably two 150s, the rest 125s. Lead ammo in the 125s, Thorium ammo in the 150s.
Afterburner, Small shield booster, 2 cap rechargers.
Hybrid damage mod.
(Not sure if that will all fit)
