Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi?
More specifically, why they decided to use such cheesy "southern fried" accents for the main characters? It's from Gainax, so I'm sure there is deeper meaning, but I can get passed the accents to see it.

I had it explained to this way:
These 2 Osaka(this is the reason for the accents) kids, Sashhi and Arumi(they pronounce ah-rumi) are in the Shopping Arcade(it's kind of like a Flea Market I think) that Sashhi's familly has shops in. The Arcade has been scheduled for demolition as part of a redevelopment plan by the city, so they are trying to enjoy the last few days of the Arcade's existence. Anyway, Sashhi's granddad is doing something on the roof of his shop and falls, at the time we think he just got hurt and that only an ancient statue of a pelican was broken. Shortly there after strange things start happening, and the kids discover that they've jumped into a new world kind of like Sliders. Overall, it's very funny, although a lot of the laughs I get is from the OTT accents. Sometime their noticable and sometimes their not.
I'm told that Goku from DB/DBZ/DBGT spoke with the same Osaka accent in the original japanese, to reinforce the idea that he was from way out in "the sticks". Funny thing really, I've never considered Osaka to "the sticks".
