I'm gonna save you a LOT of pain and flaming... When HLP is back up read the links in the WIKI about FS3 issues...

Besides what with Kazan'a Ferrium project in teh future do we really need a FS3?

Play inferno or one of the other good Fanmade sequels before you start rattling the support sabre cause it's a moot point.

From my FAQ
WHEN IS FREESPACE 3 COMING OUT?

Well things have certainly gotten interesting on this issue. FS3 used to be a sore issue with most of the community. Asking questions about it tended to get you complained at the first time and flamed to a crisp if you were foolish enough to ask again. However the announcement by Derek Smart (creator of the BattleCruiser 3000 series) that he was attempting to purchase the licence has certainly reopened the debate. Quite simply at the moment no one knows.
If you're wondering how the situation got to this point, Volition, (Simply known as [V] by the fans), the makers of Freespace had it published by a company called Interplay. Volition later struck a deal with another publisher THQ but Interplay retained the rights to Freespace. Since Interplay didn't sell the rights to [V] or hire another developer to make FS3 we were left waiting for it to appear.
The Freespace Community tried various methods to bring about FS3 including petitions and mailings to [V] and Interplay. None of these had had much of an effect since (somewhat surprisingly) Freespace 2 didn't do very well and interplay didn't wish to stick their neck out to write a third.
The really annoying thing about this is that [V] have made several statements that show their programmers are willing to do a third Freespace game but can't since Interplay hold the licenses. Interplay is now in financial trouble and many people have suggested that [V]'s parent company THQ might buy the licence. Hopefully they will, but I'm not holding my breath.

HOW ABOUT WE GET THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER AND WRITE FS3?

After questions about FS3's release date this is one of the sorest points in the community. Although the source code for FS2 has been releases and the community is working on it they'll never make an official FS3. The community has stuck by the motto "If it isn't [V], it ain't FS3" for a long time. More importantly the various members of the community have their own viewpoints of where the FS3 plotline would go. Since they are almost certainly all different from what [V] actually planned it's very hard to pick one as the official plotline for a community based FS3.
About the only thing that the community would rally round would be an official plotline from [V] but they continue to play their cards very close to their chests in this respect.
The closest the community has gotten to making FS3 is The Ferrium Project. This is a community driven project to make a new engine based on Freespace. Although Ferrium will come with its own campaign it won't be Freespace related and thus cannot be considered as Freespace 3.
Basically stay away from FS3 topics. The community is pretty bored of them having heard it so often.

Only if it was done with the original writers. Otherwise, no.
But, the thing is we are still freespace freaks even after 5 years. Its a sad fact that everyone else is not Sad
I think you'll find that most of them have perfectly good reasons for not wanting an FS3, it has nothing to do with being a 'freespace freak'.

That is another stop in Freespace 3. I looked at the Volition site yeserday and they had not updated in 2 years. Don't know if their still going or not? :(

Why would they?

I like Freespace 2 because of what it is.

If anyone released a decent 3D Space Combat game that involves Arcade physics, and with simple access to modding tools for ships/weapons etc, I'd love it, whether it was FS3 or not.

And Freelancer et al are a pain in the ass to mod as extensively as FS2 can be. :)

Ahh I don't care about Freelancer. It is like Tackeon or something like that. I don't like being a Merc. Rather take on something evil and save the universe. :D There is another problem there is no good space games coming out in the next year or so. :(

They're currently, IIRC, working on Punisher for PS2 and are in some way involved with researching what / how they can make games for the PS3.

hard-core sci-fi games are unlikely to come out for awhile. you cant sell em, flight sim games are too hard to learn, as opposed to the simple, boring, gore-for-the-sake-of-gore FPS games. SOME FPSs are good, requiring tactics and strategy. but others, like halo, are just shoot quickly, run fast. (though i havnt played halo 2 yet. im fair, ill give it a chance! ) and people dont like complicated fun games. besdies, sci-fi is 'uncool', and nobody wants to be 'uncool' :(

face it, FS is dead. theres not much we can do but MOD it and let the SCP keep going.

and anyway, most games ocming out are going to game consols anyway. computers are far superior in every way, but people likethe consols, i dont know why.

i dont think our chances are good. :(
