Russian church considers canonising a Russian solider who died in Chechnya.

At least his mother sounds like she's got her head screwed on straight. Why are these people trying to provoke the whole religious aspect on both sides, and pretend it's not about oil or other resources?

*sigh*

Why are they going to cannonise him? Did he do anything saint like, or pious?

Because apparently they gave him the choice of Islam or Death, and he chose death. Personally I'd be asking which way was East.

Because if it's religious, it is somehow not as bad that if it's about resources. If it's about resources then the aggressor/initiator is nothing but a lowlife thug who's trying to take something not their's.

On Topic: I'm of the opinion(granted I'm a Protestant) that for a person to be considered for sainthood that they need to either have done something/have been vitally important for the church.

Well, the original 'Saints' were all people that died rather than surrender their religion, so in the strictly biblical sense, yes, he could be considered for canonhood.

However, as Lib says, moving it into religious grounds makes it Christians vs Muslims, which is a lot easier to justify than 'Russia vs Chechnya', which is a far less 'fair' fight.

Better off with them than the 5 appendaged genocidal superbugs waiting out around Ross 128.

I thought the sainthood could now only be granted if the candidate performed a miracle? Or is that just Catholicism?

Actually, IIRC it's 2 miracles... though I suspect the Russian orthodox church would know better than me.
