which explains why missiles are the most popular long range weapon for dealing heavy damage. There's something screwy with balance if a small gun out damages a medium or large gun.

I'd imagine Artillery is the most popular long range weapon, but Railguns and Lasers do more damage over time. Missiles are a bit different, because the bigger the missile combined with a smaller ship, means the missile will do less damage.

also, missiles dont (rarely at least, since i've never seen it) miss, whereas a large artillary at similar range (even within optimal) can miss...
Before the nerf, they were better...

Missiles are pretty decent now, they just don't serve much use in fleet engagements anymore. Ravens are very useful though, because the new missile skills have really improved the speed, range and flight time of big blobs of death. Against another BS, Raven is the most deadly solo-ship because of the strong shield tank you can fit and relative unstoppable damage over time. 90% of Ravens flying around in EVE are just newbies though, which is why they tend to die so fast.
Missiles work really well, unless you happen to be lobbing a Torpedo at a frigate, in which case forget it. Have you seen the Cerberus? It's a Caracel on steroids, and does so much damage that I've seen a plated Thorax instantly crippled by one volley. Missiles are definitely NOT crap in the right hands / tactics.

My corpmate used to paste interceptors in a Caracal. Now he has a Cerb and he's f#####g unstoppable.

After hearing that, I'm so glad i don't PVP. Because, frankly, I'd lose every engagement, so there is little point in even trying.

I've taken down an Armageddon in a Tristan before.

That shouldn't be possible. I accept that it is, but it shouldn't be fecking possible. That shows how imbalanced the game is. Since tracking is God now, Frigates are the new I WIN ship, and you have cruisers and BS running around with fricking frig guns. It's stupid.

Don't worry Lib, taking down a Geddon with a Tristan is not a given. This is the rule of big ships in eve: Know how to fly them.
Even if you have the skills to fly the ship, you probably don't have all the skills necessary to fly and understand it. The above Tristan menance, is easily destroyed with a few drones and a Nos or Smartbomb. The Tristan was probably attacking a Gankgeddon, which sole purpose is to destroy and usually has no tanking ability.
The game is not inbalanced. It's just full of idiots.
