IIRC SG is aimed at research of Tech2 stuff.
But pick any specialty you'd enjoy the most. You can always expand into other areas later and it takes ages before you can train up research skills that can help the corp.
I would suggest putting your Intelligence and Memory attributes and focus on some Learning skills.
Though slow to start it reduces your training time later on.
Have funs.

I enjoy PVP more, but for the time being we're doing general ratting, mining, trading and funstuff. Research is on the backburner right now. Train for what you enjoy best after trying a bit of everything, then you can fit in somewhere.

My new character is 'Grugg'.
He is a gallente Intaki and am currently with the University of Callie.
After a few missions I'll drop by Renyn and visit Sector Game.
Within a year the Gallente Federation shall be dominated by SG!
hehe. /end hype

Now this sounds like a neat game and all but... What is it like? Are you plodding through mines, are you out in space? From what y'all are saying it sounds cool, something I'd like to try.
(What are the system requirements?)

Its hard to explain what its like. It's best to experience it yourself or maybe do a little reading on the official site.
You can do most anything you feel like. From trading to combat.
I love the political aspect to the game. The fact that its an actual virtual world, where corporations and politics are always moving. It's realistic in the sense of a real political environment is always happening, as the players are basically living another life.
Play the trial and get addicted like the rest of us.

Would it affect my story progression to apply to Sectorgame?

Nope.... Though not sure what you mean since you make your own story.

Umm...there are story line missions that I'm getting from my Agent...

Those are random, and there is a good chance you will get the same mission again.
I did the Angel Extravaganza mission 3 times yesterday.

I got bored out of my mind doing the Trojan courier missions. So I'm now doing combat missions for an agent in Renyn...

No No, you can continue doing whatever you like, it won't affect it.
