As someone pointed out, it's something you have to want to do... so have some fun!

Scales are the building blocks that melodies are built from. Play a scale till you can play it without looking at the fretboard... then change it up, and soon you will have your own tune!

That name starts with an 'E': Epiphone
Or you could just play your favourite song that uses one of these scales.
How do I know if the songs I like are ones that use scales? I think it helps that I like ocuntry, so alot of it, (the older stuff at least...) is a guitar, acoustic at that.

A great song that uses a scale (I've forgotten which one) is Misirlou, or some variation of that spelling, it escapes me. Have you ever heard it? It was used in pulp fiction, and in 'Pump It Louder' by the black eyed peas. It is a great way to get to know the scale, a good song, and it helps you build up on your sweep picking.
Misirlou

Well, try it slow first of course

Hmm... a surfing version of a greek folk tune played at an unusual tuning by the grandfather of surf music... not sure I'd call that a beginner's tune...
Miserlou lesson at Fender's player club.

You might want to start here: Fenders beginner lessons.

True, but smoke on the water seemed an insult

Haha... don't knock Smoke on the water, just because everyone played it... although, learning it would be stretching the word 'learning' a bit...

I agree with Willy, my advice is kinda deep-endish. If you are that commited then go ahead, take mine. It is simply a matter of choice.
