Shave with the grain, not against it. Use a good exfoliating scrub before shaving, and use traditional cream when shaving. Do not try to look like James Bond - you cannot do that without an open razor, and using that takes real skill.
Also, use a soothing balm, with tea tree and witchhazel.

Shaving with the grain doesn't get that smooth feeling though. Kinda rules that out, though I am willing to shave with the grain on those regular working days. The thing is, the hairs on my neck grow in so many directions that it's not possible to shave "with the grain" all the time without spending about half an hour calculcating which direction it all goes.
Exofoliating is something I'll be avoiding I think, mainly because of the fact it makes your skin sensitive to sunlight - Meaning more sunblock, which means more cream on my face, more money spent and more possibility for skin irritations from applying said stuff.
Traditional shaving creams are a no-go area for me, tried them and hated them. I really love the Ice Cool Shaving Foam from Gilette and on occaison, the Palmolive stuff with Aloe Vera. They really are nice. I've tried traditional creams, soaps, gels and find the foam suits me best.
Soothing balm - Well I use Nivea's Soothing Balm for Sensitive Skin. Find it works quite well, although I am open for alternatives. To be true any shaving rash or spot I get is healed a LITTLE by the soothing balm, but I don't believe any balms can truely heal those. I need to get to the source of the problem instead of treating the symptom.
