LoL.
On a sidenote. Brits drew the last match and won the ashes series.
Congrats anywho.
Twas a close game near the end, if it wasn't for the bloody weather, things may have been a different story...
Until next year anywho...

2 years. And when they're playin on an Aussie Pitch, with Aussie weather... well, they shouldn't be getting too used to those Ashes.Grug wrote:LoL.

That's it. Blame the pitch and blame the weather. Looks like the swap is complete. We've managed to steal the Autralians cricket skills in return for giving them ours in blaming everything except the fact that the other side played betterBlack Wolf wrote:2 years. Can someone please tell me why the Ashes - a f#####g cricket match, between a whole 2 countries - was the single most important thing on the bbc news that day?
Riots in belfast? Nope.
The ongoing war in Iraq? Pff.
Typhoon in China? Ty-who?
Inundated New Orleans? Nah.
Elections in Norway & Japan? Where?
No, lets stick with a bunch of blokes in white cardies hitting a little ball. Referenced for the entire f#####g programme, including the weather and - f### knows why - the Scottish news (at least the presenters there had the dignity to look embarrassed at having it on their autocue).
I've never seen so much fuss for a game that lasts 5 days, involves hardly any running, and still ends in a bloody draw.

Cause lets face it. England hasn't won it for nearly 20 years and it's interested people in the sport again.
Don't know if it should be the number 1 story but if thousands of people are willing to take the day off just to cheer at the players you can't say that there's no interest.
No idea why it was on the Scottish new though. Maybe they just wanted to prove that it is possible for British people to win something in an attempt to try to get the scots to try.

It's not about interest, it's about importance & proportion. The biggest riots (by the polices own statements) in british history in N.Ireland, and they're kep back for 10 minutes gloating? And another 5 minutes at the end bit (and then also during the weather)?
I don't even think they carried the news about the oil coverup, either.
Um, we actually won a World Championship in a sport* at the same time. Plus we had a distinctly better time in the last world cup qualifing round.
*not a very important sport, granted.

Oh don't get me wrong. I don't doubt Australia played pretty crappily, and that England was the better team of the series. If it weren't for Warne, we'd've been well and truly trounced, and everyone here knows that.karajorma wrote:That's it. Blame the pitch and blame the weather. Looks like the swap is complete. The truth is that the Aussie team's been going downhill for awhile. We got beaten by, of all teams, Bangladesh in a one dayer not long before the ashes that showed that pretty clearly. The main reason is that the awesome players we've had of late have been aging and playing on rather than being replaced (because there wasn't anyone of that calibre around to replace them) but we've been able to hide it because, for quite a few years, most of our major series have been on dry, bouncy wickets (ie. India or here) or against mediocre teams, and this Australian team are the masters of that sort of a wicket. This new English side, while undoubtedly a great bunch of cricketers, will still be too underexperienced in those sorts of conditions when they have to come down here and try to hang on to the urn in just two years.

I guess we'll have to wait and see about that.
@At Aldo : I did say that it shouldn't be number 1 story. NI is more important but it's an ongoing situation. If it had been the first night of trouble I couldn't excuse it at all.

Yay, thread hijack!
LoL at it being on the news though. It was over here a bit, but I guess it wasn't shown as much seeing as we didn't win.
